REF: 2006. Diesel. Stilo. 70K miles. FSH.

In the last two weeks and only just after being started from cold the car will lose all power. Its like the throttle has been disconnected. But dip the clutch and the engine revs freely. Release the clutch and press the throttle (any position) and nothing from the engine. This can last 20-30 seconds then it goes away. It doesn't happen every time but does so with increasing frequency.

As this is my wives beloved car and she uses it for the kid runs to school I'd like to get some notions on resolutions asap.

Thank you to every one who shares their ideas. If there are more questions to ask, please do so.

Cheers, Earl

2 initial things to look at on a jtd would be

the maf attached to air filter below the battery, which you could remove the electrical connector to and see if the car runs better

another quite common item that can cause power issues is a choked up egr valve which can be either a stuck solenoid in the vales or clogged up with soot, and can either be blanked off or removed to cleaned many go for blanking option with no side effects to engine.

Also do you have any error messages displayed , and do you have air con fitted to the car

I have just changed the fuel filter (which looked spotless inside) and its not different.

I will look at the maf sensor and egr valve (where is it please). Yes, the car has air con.

Cheers for comments

I would add that after changing the filter it runs worse. In essence the gaps between full power are shorter. The way its going it is now practically un driveable.

I feel but have not tried, if I were to get it up to a constant speed on a motorway, that it would hold that speed all day. But if I were to try and drive in traffic, needing constant throttle adjustments, then it would bog down and be undriveable.

Hope this helps and not confuses the issue.

Cheers all.

Egr valve is a very common fault; it costs nothing to blank it and only takes ½ hr.
Worth doing just to see if it is the problem.

EGR Question

Hi All,

My wife has a 2004 1.9 diesel with FSH and about 90K on the clock. It is only used for short daily journeys of about 5 miles each way.

It has an intermittent running issue in that around 2000 rpm it is reluctant to pull away under light loads. If you're ham fisted with the throttle and quickly move past this threshold all is fine but that's not the way she drives.

Putting your foot down when it misses a beat quickly gets you past this flat spot but then you're speeding which is not desirable.

My local garage once cleaned out the egr valve and the problem when away for a few weeks but is back now and even worse.

They quoted £220 to replace the item however when looking on Ebay its only £50 to buy a new replacement. If I'm looking in the right place under the bonnet (passenger side, at the top near the bulkhead) it doesn't look to hard a job to justify £170 labour?

So my questions are.

Do readers think its the EGR valve?
Is £220 realistic?
When looking under the bonnet am I looking at the right component?
How long is a DIY install if you're fairly handy with a set of tools?

Cheers for any helpful replies. This is getting the Mrs down so its getting me down.

As what Davren says. Then take the car on the highway, drive in 4th gear at a little bit plus your speed limit for as long as you can. I think it was over 3500 RPM for a good 10 minutes would clean the system out, the longer the better. At least once per month it needs to be done if the car is used for the school run.

Re: EGR Question

As suggested by cris1117 above, try blanking the EGR valve.
+1
The symptoms described by curlyearly are clearly due to the EGR valve that stays open, blocked by dirt.

When you dismount the EGR valve, pay attention that your tool may hit a nude +12V bolt leading in a huge spark. (At least, it is the big surprise I had the first time I dismount my EGR valve).
So you should unplug the negative terminal of the battery.

To clean the EGR valve, use some diesel fuel (you can get some diesel fuel from the purge of the gas-oil filter).

If you don't want to clean it again in 20.000 or 30.000 miles, insert a thin steel sheet at the entrance of the EGR valve.

Here is a link (including picts from the web is NOT user-friendly on this forum) to a picture with the dimension of the thin steel sheet you may include in the EGR circuit :
