Right guys today I started my car

1. Clutch down.
2. 1st gear

Went to get my biting point like normal but asoon as I started to raise my clutch it started to judder (like it does when you have it too high and about to stall) and I only raised abit and the more i rise the clutch the more it judders and I mean like crazy and the car don't move if it's low but it still judders? I got it to the normal place to set off and it set off like normal but it was juddering like mad until I put the gas in but asoon as its out of 1st it's fine?

Is it that my clutch has gone or something els? I've never had a clutch go while I've been driving so I don't know what to expect?

Try revving the car a bit and slipping the clutch to clean any contamination off the flywheel and friction face, does it still judder afterwards?
I'm not convinced that modern asbestos free clutches are as good as the old unhealthy asbestos ones.

How do you slip the clutch? :S never heard that one before?

Slipping the clutch is where you let it bite a little but don't let it all the way out, a bit like some people do when waiting at traffic lights rather than use their handbrake.

Oh now I know what you mean ill try that when I'm next out in it before I set off and let you know how it goes
Thanks for that :)

id be checking your clutch fluid first mate.

Usually when a clutch goes (hydraulic clutch) the bite point wont exist, i.e. you let the clutch up and it doesn't stall (if you don't put the accelerator on)

also, to test your clutch is easy - handbrake on, clutch down, foot on accelerator (floor it a bit), fourth or fifth gear and let the clutch up nice and quick, it should stall almost immediately, if it takes several seconds then your clutch is worn.

However, id be checking the fluid levels first and bleed the clutch maybe you have air in there somewhere....

I hope it isn't mate but this is what I had when my clutch went(this was new one on me also)

very violent shudder when trying to back out of the drive , ok with clutch in let it out to point of bite and it just shook the whole car.
like this(camera hanging on open bonnet)

asked around and got similar ideas , cleaning up dust or oil off plates.
struggled on for a few more attempts to get up the drive, eventually did and drove up and down the road a bit , same symptoms pulling off but once on the move reduced and when in gear no issue at all accelerating decelerating in gear all ok.
parked up again and same again trying to get out of drive, asked garage I trust and answer was same as above and pretty much a make it or break it either way the gearbox is coming off to fix it or look whats wrong.same advice give it some beans on a hill to try to clear or burn off contamination if it is that.

so given green light to give it the beans I did , unfortunately this was the result.

looks like judder was early days to this with maybe a few of the supporting fingers snapped hub to disc.
heres the thread
https://www.fiatforum.com/stilo/310551-bad-clutch-judder.html

and yes it was a smf conversion with sprung hub in plate.
hopefully your standard plates wont do this.

although I remember someone on here having the lining worn to rivits and coming off the hub one side ?

ps what size engine and petrol/diesel , there is also a totally knackered dual mass flywheel maybe if diesel ?

It's a 1.6 petrol 2002 reg
It was driving like normal last night but I filmed it but can't upload it off phone so I'll do it later but could bring my clutch all the way up and car would take itself with my foot of the pedal this about 5 hours before, after I left it got back in did a 5 mile drive and it was back to normal? :S

When got like one grand spear I'll take it garage and have it cheeked out
Thanks you guys!

Hey i tryed this i ended up with smoke and a burny smell

Is my clutch bad?

Mind you it is a 1.9 diesel

Well i floored it and let clutch up in 5th quickly with handbrake on and gotba smokey bonnet and a terrible burning smell although car seems to drive fine - any other ways to test clutch?

the way that test above is written ? it has little chance of stalling with flooring the accelerator ? especially with a jtd or jtdm stronger clutches and too much torque to stall , although ive never tried this or wanted to
best thing it could have done is cleared dust or oil off the plate ?
the plate oe should be organic which is most tolerant of overheating if I remember right, so it overheats , slips and then when cooled down should of recovered.
I was put of Kevlar a bit as I don't think it recovers fully if overheated .
xb23 do you suspect clutch? stuff like this is not a test to try for no reason.
for your car(like mine) if I was on a carriageway in 6th doing say 60mph just under 2000 revs and then floored it to overtake something for example it would slip just from the torque (revs would rise but car speed didn't)
this was when I had a tuning box on though without it it didn't slip.just more torque than the clutch was designed for.
