Car was sat on drive for a few weeks and battery went flat as would be expected. I re-charged the battery and it was at this point the dash has developed problems. Loads of lights being lit, rev counter, petrol, speedo all not working.

I have read all the posts on this common issue and so far tried this:
1. I cleaned the earth on the near side next to the battery/bonnet strut.
2. Removed and checked F53 and F37 fuses.
3. Disconnected earth overnight and reconnected.
4. Replaced the battery!

I can get the dash to go through it's checking process but it never seems to properly sort itself out.

I know this seems to be a common fault and people pay to have the dash repaired. However, it just seems too coincidental that the problem only started after the battery went flat and was re-charged.

Any other ideas? Also, what is the actual fault that is often repaired on these dashboards?

My suspicion being from an electronics design and repair background is that one or more components had started to fail. With the battery going flat the dashboard will have been subjected to lower than normal voltage and a voltage spike whilst charging - this is enough to finish off these failing components (y)

Refitting Instrument Cluster

Following on from my other post, I bought a new instrument cluster and it works fine - so I guess mine just died.

My challenge now is getting the new one in! Old one came out fairly easily so I assumed likewise for putting the replacement in. Wrong!

Does anyone have any tips as I spent ages manipulating the cluster and was worried about breaking clips etc. The steering wheel and trim are the main problems (wheel is in full down position).

I'm contemplating removing the steering wheel now! Has anyone put an instrument cluster in - should I be removing more trim or am I missing something?

Thanks

Re: Refitting Instrument Cluster

I replaced mine during the week by having the steering wheel pulled out and down fully,it was a close fit to slide in from the outside over the wiper stalk (screen downwards),what i was concerned about was scratching the clear plastic lense, also fit the plastic top trim piece and wiring connector before pushing clocks back into position. Hope this helps.

Re: Refitting Instrument Cluster

I put mine in from the right. As he ^^ said, wheel out and down. Clocks at a stight tilt top forwarn and it will slide in. If you are struggling you could take the plastic off from behind the wheel. Three screws working under the wheel.

It's in and working - I forgot the wheel had reach adjustment and had been relying on just downward movement! :bang:

I have not noticed an issue with my dash yet BUT cannot now open my tailgate either with soft touch or electronic key? Flat battery today, now charged but tailgate problem? Has anyone any suggestions please?

I've come across a few dash issues and a tailgate issue where it would open with the key but not with the tailgate button, and these were caused by some folk enabling alarms, indicator flash with remote C/L, and changing the alarm region with MultiECUscan. It also causes other weird faults like bonnet open when it isn't, and sometimes a dead cluster after a battery change , with only the airbag lights coming on.

Hi dan4280, 411 guy and GPz750

I have the same issue as you describe dan4280 so it looks as if I need to replace the instrument cluster.

When you all replaced your instrument cluster did the vehicle mileage automatically update from the ecu or did you have to manually change it. My current instrument cluster still reads the current mileage.

Thanks

If the replacement instrument panel came from another car, it will retain the mileage from that car. You can increase, but not decrease, the mileage with the registered version of MES (MultiEcuScan).

If you add your location to your user profile, someone close to you with MES may offer to do it for you.
