Just blown off a..... 206 GTI!!!

Here I was, just happily driving along when I noticed a dark object approaching fast in my rear view mirror. Thought nothing of it but the next time I looked, the 206 (I didn't know it was a GTI at this point) was right on my backside, weaving from side to side looking to overtake me.

We approached some traffic lights and the road changed from a single to a dual carriage way. The lights just turned red as we got to them. I stayed in the left hand lane and the 206 drew up beside me. I glance over and see a chap in his late 20's early 30's grinning back at me and stab his accelerator indicating he wanted to play.

I turn back to look ahead in anticipation waiting for the lights to change. Adrenaline starts rushing through my body and my legs start trembling. Great, clear road ahead. I slowly let the clutch up to biting point and held it there whilst trying to balance the car with the throttle without it revving too much.

The lights turn amber and I release the clutch but s**t, I bogged my start! The 206 gets away cleanly and I set off in hot persuit with waaaaay too much wheels spin. First gear, 6000rpm, the 206 is about a cars length in front of me, change gear in to second and he edges away ever so slightly but hang on, whats this?! Just over 6000 revs, change gear in to third and I start gaining on him! My palms are sweaty as I clinch the steering wheel tighter and start leaning forward. I carry on reeling him in and I reach for the gear stick ready for my next up-change. Once again the induction kit and exhaust scream relentlessly as I reach 6000 revs.

4th gear and we're level, side by side glancing at each other and see the look on his face in disgust as a Fiat is bashing his ego. We're getting well into treble figure speeds and both engines scream for mercy. Change in to 5th and I start pulling away leaving the 206 with a nice view of the boot of my Stilo.

Coming to the end of the dual carriage way and in the blur of the speed I nearly forgot there is a roundabout ahead. I anchor on the stoppers, tyres struggling to bring the speed down to a level enough to tackle the left, right on to the roundabout. I leave by the second exit and give a flash of my hazards but he follows me and flashes his headlights. I

pull over and get out of the car. The other driver gets out too and asked me "What the hell is that and what's in it?!" Not wanting to sound too pleased as I thought his was a 1.4, I said "A 1.6, what about yours?". "Mine's a GTI!" "No way", I said and had a look on the boot and sure enough there was the badge. No, I thought, anybody can stick a badge on their car so I have a nosey at the interior and I spot leather "bucket" seats and the GTI interior. We have some more chit chat and go our seperate ways. I couldn't help but grinning as I drove off...

I thought the 206GTI came as a 1.6 or a 1.9

EDIT - Are we talking new or old GTI here?

Re: Just blown off a..... 206 GTI!!!

I don't know what year it is, it had a private plate but he did say it had 130-odd bhp!
TBH, I don't care if driver error came in to it, he may have missed a gear or whatever but that time I beat him! Another time I might not be that lucky!

I'm beginning to wonder if I've been sold a 1.8 thats been registered as a 1.6. Every time I've borrowed one of them "G-tech" thingies of my mate, I've always done a sub 9.5sec 0-60 time... I doubt the induction kit and exhaust would give me that much more power!

The 1.8 is only 0.2 seconds faster than the 1.6 at 0-60. I think he's got a well tuned abarth The abarth is not much slower than the GTi's to 60

Re: Just blown off a..... 206 GTI!!!

thats true, especially with the bad start, even the abarth would have trouble catching the gti (but only for a little while ) .
its a mystery

Re: Just blown off a..... 206 GTI!!!

You can check what engine your car has by looking at the pictures in the cars manual showing where the dipstick etc are. My 1.2 stilo was initially registered as a 1.6 so I had to use this to prove to the DVLA that I only had a 1.6. Strangely when getting insurance quotes it still more often than not comes up as a 1.6 on their registration records.

Re: Just blown off a..... 206 GTI!!!

I thought the 1.6 and 1.8 were visually nearly identical?

I've beaten countless 2ltr Focuses (or should that be "Foci") and Golf GTIs. Most of these were from a rolling start though. I've thought before that the Stilo seemed too quick to be a 1.6.... I admit the 206 was quicker to 60-70mph but after that, I was passing him like he was stood still and I walked passed him if you get what I mean? Like I said, maybe he missed a gear change but I still beat him!

Re: Just blown off a..... 206 GTI!!!

I pi$$ed if a new Golf TDi yesterday... and i've only got a 1.2. He hammered out in front of me on a big roundbout and i thought nothing of it, other than saying "berk" out aloud. Then i realised i was gaining on him...... as he understeered like buggered round the exit he was taking, and i scampered up the inside, look across at him, with a "berk" look on my face. Then on the straight he left me choking in the acrid exhaust fumes only a diesel can leave behind.

1.2 Stilo might not have outright pace, but being light over its front wheels at least means it goes round corners reasonably well.
