I am about to buy the selenia 20k that the manual recommends as i've hit 3k and the oil is sitting a little bit on the low side, doesnt look like there was much in it from the dealers.

Anyone use anything else? Anything better than this selenia?

As long as you use anything to API SL you'll be ok. I use Halford's semi synthetic in my Abarth. It's £20 for 5 litres. I've had a look at the Selenia 20K but it looks expensive for what it is. As all SL oils will have to meet a certain minimum spec I can't see Fiat having an excuse to wriggle out of anything.

Due to my extended RAC warranty I have to have an oil change every 6K or 6 months which is probably the best thing you can do for any engine.

I shouldn't worry too much about using Selenia oil. I have always had my car serviced at Fiat dealers and they have never used Selenia. I have queried it and they said they can't get hold of it easily. Therefore, i'm always offered two options; unknown oil for the standard service price, or Mobil 1 for £7 extra.

The 2 Fiat dealers who have serviced my car both used Castrol Magnetic.

I checked my manual the other day and it said to use a Semi Synthetic 10w/40 with an API SJ (or better) rating.

In my opinion if you use an oil which meets the required specification in the manual you can't really go wrong. I would recommend changing your oil once between services and using cheaper semi-synthetic of the recommended specification rather than a more expensive fully synthetic which is only change every 12000 miles or year.

Top up using the same type / brand of oil if possible.

I used a decent oil in mine, not the Fiat recommended, be warned - my tappets got very noisy. Now got selenia 20k in it and it's now really quiet, no more tappet noise!!!!

I called my fiat dealer today, they said they dont have any in stock and to be honest it doesnt really matter as long as its 10W40 semi synthetic or better. I got myself 10W40 Castrol Magnatec (5 litres for 22 quid)...came with a BMW Williams cap too....throwing that in the cupboard.

I think the fact that the 2 fiat dealers i called didnt have any in stock, use magnatec for oil changes, i'll run with that. Better to have non selenia pil than no oil at all :)

My dealer uses GTX magnatec 5-30 in petrol Fiat & Alfa's. My Stilo used to use a litre every 1000 miles or so. In theory, it would get around 2.5 changes of oil ever 12000 miles!! Aparently, the Alfa will use a lot of oild too. It even has a sticker on the windscreen saying so.

Cheers,

I've just broke 3000 miles, on my 1.6 and its sitting just above the minimum marker, in the theory of 1 litre of oil per thousand miles. That would sit about right...i was a little surprised ot be honest that my oil was sitting that low so quickly. Will top her up tonight with the 10w40 magnatec

Well no top up today, checked the oil in the carpark at work and it seemed fine. It had been sitting all day so its probably had a chance to drain down.

I've read that using anything but Selenia 20K causes the Stilo to burn more oil? But I can't see why . . .

Working for halfrauds I'd recommend Castrol GTX Magnatec 10W-40 (our oil is Comma). Our store won the Castrol award for Magnatec sales; we got a £1000 bonus to share out! Go my parts department! I was going to give it out to just parts people until my manager said i had to share it with cycles too (damn him!) :D

My dealership uses selenia, its not difficult to get at for dealers, they just buy it from Fiat Lubricants, its available in 1,2 and 5 litre cans and also available loose for bulk orders by tanker. (Heres a little secret, alot of oil companies give dealers a support package for workshop equipment as an inducement to stock their oil, Fiat dont.)

The 2 dealers i called up didn't stock it. They didn't use it in the garage either. Typical arnold clark. I didn't need to top up the oil luckily i rechecked the oil before i went to fill it, sitting in the car park all day seemed to be enough time for the oil to drain back down and the dipstick was reading normal. about 1/3 below max

I had my first service just the other day and the dealers put Selenia in and i didn't even have to ask for it!!! guess some dealers might be ok after all (theough they did charge me 50 euros for the 5 litre can (is that a bit overpriced or is that about right??))

You cannot be serious about a litre of oil used per thousand miles. That is horrendous consumption. If you are using that amount, you have serious engine problems.

No it's fine, it would appear when i checked the oil it was still up in the engine :) Let it sit in the carpark all day and rechecked. Oil level was fine....just as well i rechecked before pouring litres of oil into it.

I read the litre/thousand elsewhere on the forums, thats what i was referring to at the point where it looked like my oil was seemingly low.

My Dealers say that they use Selenia on the service. Inbetween I use Castrol GTX Magnetic 10- 40. Never experienced any problems with that. For some reason my Abarth doesn't seem to be using much oil at all (not that I'm complaining mind). She's done 14.5k now so perhaps the engine has settled down? Sometimes I find it difficult with clean oil to read the dipstick (or possibly I'm being one!) but I presume that as long as the knobbly bit on the end is wet along it's length then the level is ok?

How hard is it to change the oil? ive never done it before? how much do i need to put back in?

I got some havoline SAE 5w 30 motor oil to "top up" my oil level?
is this oil ok for my stilo? 1.2 petrol?

Is it ok to top up your oil with a different brand as I assume i have Selenia from last service? Should i just top up as its low or should i completely change oil? im due a service in the next 2 months but am worried as the oil level is v low.

You shouldn't mix oils unless you're certain they are of similar properties.. i.e. multigrade, semi synthetic or fully synthetic.

The recommendation for the 1.2 is 2.8 litre's using Selenia 20K which is a semi synthetic 10w 40.

I use Castrol Magnatec every 6000.. (y)
