OK, I'm going to write a lengthy explanation here, as I'm not sure what is relevant to the problem, as there are a lot of faults with this heap of junk.

A brief outline of the problem is:
It started saying "Engine Fault" and cutting out whilst driving. I need to turn the ignition off and then turn it over and then it starts again.

More in depth:
When it cuts out, I have to turn the ignition of for around 3 or 4 seconds, then try to start it again. (if the ignition is turned off for less than this time, it won't start, just constantly turns over.)

I noticed that it never cuts out when I'm accelerating, only when I let off the throttle or if I'm cruising. Also, if I rev the engine to the red line when it is cutting out frequently, it definitely reduces the frequency and sometimes it will stop it completely for that particular journey. But when I stop for any length of time, it's back to square 1.

When I start the car in the morning it squeals. It sounds like the usual fan belt slipping sound. It lasts for around 30 seconds.
Everytime I restart the engine after it cuts out, the squealing starts again. Only for 10 seconds max this time.
It also seems like there is a slight loss of power whilst it's squealing, which leads me to think that it isn't the fan belt.
I just noticed that I can make the squealing start by turning the heaters from cold to hot.

hmm..not good! ok, sounds like two things. Fuel starvation for the cutting out and alternator problem for the squealing.

Fuel starvation will need some diagnosis, but start with the simple - change the fuel filter - check associated pipe work. Move onto the injectors/rails etc, check pipe work back to the fuel tank, I assume the pump is ok but I wouldn't discount an issue there.

Alternator wise, get it tested, simple. Certainly change the belt, might be too tight or too loose - turning the heat on will draw on more power from the alternator (to power the blower motor) and so this may be why it squeals.

Another thought though, is to get the codes read, asap. Any codes residing on the system may well point you in the right direction, for all I know it could be a faulty CKP sensor causing the cut outs, but either way its very important you get the codes read.

best of luck, hopefully it will be something simple as the JTDs are a very reliable design.
