So I have an issue with the boot on my '02 1.2 16v 5-door.

The boot release on the key fob does absolutely nothing regardless of how long i press it. Also, the microswitch does nothing at all on the handle. The only way I can get in to the boot is by using that key in the lock.

Today I pulled the trim off the boot and disconnected the handle assembly completely and took it off altogether. I sprayed contact cleaner where I could, and tried to take apart the microswitch to see if I could test it with the multimeter. Unfortunately I couldn't get it opened fully, so I just connected it back up and put it all back together. I rang a local breaker and he has a handle there for 40 euro (I'm in Ireland) but then I got thinking that if the key fob button does nothing as well, then it's probably not the switch that's the problem...

I took it to an auto-electrician before about it, and he was actually useless. He said there was no way of telling if the cables weren't damaged on the way back to the boot, without taking apart the car entirely, lol! Surely all of the lights and wiper would be gone too if that was the case... Anyway, he obviously could have tested the connections!

So, does anyone have any ideas as to why it's broken? I can't afford to take it to someone and pay to find out what's wrong as well as get the part I need, so if I could narrow it down a bit that would be a huge help.

Thanks!

I have the same problem. You can only strip the boot lid so much then it into damaging parts. Been there done that. I haven't even priced a switch from a breakers yet. But as I'm selling the car on, it really needs fixed. Let me know if u get any feedback. Ta

Regarding the original post, my bet is the boot pop solenoid has had it.

Remove the interior trim from the tailgate
Pop the linkage to the key lock off
Undo the 2 10mm bolts by the latch mechanism
Wiggle it out
There will be a pop solenoid attached to the back of the lock mechanism - get a multimeter on the 2 pins on the connector to it.
Push a screwdriver in to the lock to make it latch (just as the catch would do on the boot lid - you can just pull the key lock linkage to unlatch it again afterwards.)
Try the boot handle - see if you have a momentary reading on the multimeter. If you do, it is trying to trigger the pop solenoid, so the pop solenoid itself is likely the problem. If you don't, the issue is elsewhere - its not even trying to pop the solenoid.

Any idea where to get a new solenoid from? or what the part is called for ebay searches etc? thanks in advance :)
