hi... im new to all this so not quite sure how it works, basically my fiat stilo 1.9jtd went for its mot other day an failed due to excessive black smoke coming out of the exhaust... in the engine department there was this type of plug that was not plugged in so i plugged it in an while driving its jutters every so often either when im tryin to pick up speed or come to a stop an trying to pull off again, I unplugged that same plug back out in the engine department and its stopped juttering but black smoke is still excessive ( when the plug thingy was plugged in black smoke had stopped whn u unplugged it black smoke was excessive again put stopped juttering)??? Has anyone got any ideas as the black smoke its gettin annoyin now. Thanks

If the plug was on the right of the engine on the air intake piping it was probably the MAF which, if faulty, can give the symptoms you describe. Another possibility is the EGR valve at the rear of the cam cover which, when 'coked up' can also cause hesitation under 2500 revs and a great deal of black smoke.
The EGR can be blanked off by fitting a plate on the end of the convoluted steel hose.
I'm sure you will find further information in either the Guides or searching the forum.

Would this be a egr blanking plate and a gasket to solve the black smoke problem?? How easy our they to fit?? Does it affect the performance by blanking it off?? Yes the plug was on the right side of the engine... sorry for the dum questiona dont know alot about cars as my dad used to fit any problems for me but no longer around. Thanks for reply

Fitting blanking plate is easy. You can buy one on ebay or make your own out of at least 1mm metal> Just need to drill 2 holes using the gasket as a template. The plug on the RHS is it down low going between the turbo and the air filter. If yes then change the map sensor
