Hello, I need a little advice on this as, my research so far has some gaps in it.

The gear stick moves when I accelerate my 1.2 Stilo. Now from what I've read on here I think it could be the gearbox/engine mount that needs replacing. I've seen someone's tutorial for replacing a mount on a 1.9 jtd, and I wondered if this is the same one on mine or different?

I'd also like to know if the gearbox/Engine mounts are technically the same thing, and what one I need to replace and where it is.

Thanks in advance.

More likely to be the engine stabiliser (reaction link) under the engine/gearbox. If that's worn, the engine and gearbox can rock fore and aft on acceleration and deceleration, causing the gearstick to do the same.

Hello Davren, thanks for your quick reply. That's great, I recognize the part, although there's a whole load of identical looking mounts that all have different descriptions, do you know what the part number is or can you send me a link of the part? And when they say put the hydro support under the power unit, do they just mean engine? Cheers, Pete

Fiat part number for the 1.2 engine stabiliser is 46781891.

They mean the gearbox end of the engine, but I've no idea why the manual says put a support under there. All the weight of the engine and gearbox is held on the main engine and gearbox mountings, not the stabiliser. You shouldn't need any support to change the stabiliser.

A word of warning..... the vertical bolt (item 5 on the diagram below) screws into a captive nut on top of the suspension cross member. The bolt has been known to snap before fully unscrewing from the nut.

Hello, I posted this thread a while ago.....I have now actually replaced said gearbox mount.....with a lot of stress. The gear stick still moves on acceleration....could it be one of the other mounts?? If you could.let me know then that would be great!!!

It could be any of the engine and/or gearbox mounts allowing movement.

Exactly how much play on your knob are you experiencing? Never thought I'd ask another bloke that question....

The bushes are rubber. They get old, they dry out and they deteriorate. Sometimes they crumbled, sometimes the split completely. Sometimes they just wear and wear and the holes get larger and things get a bit slack.

If the problem is particularly acute I would expect you to be able to jump on and off the accelerator in low gears and for you to be able to hear the engine knock back and forth in it's mounts. You should also feel this movement in drive line shunt as the motion of the engine moves the engine ahead of the drive train. That would give a noticeable yo-yo see-saw like effect to driving that you would feel when you apply or lift off throttle.

Remember, the gear stick is probably all of about 2 inches long below the pivot point. Above the pivot point is probably a good 12-14 inches, so milometers of movement in the engine bay will be accentuated to centimeters of movement in your knob.

I would say that as things get older and elements begin to wear, whilst play is not entirely desirable, the emergence and onset of some movement and is entirely probably and somewhat likely. If it isn't causing gear selection issues or jumping out of gear I would not be inclined to chase the problem particularly. It's simply not worth it.

The particular element you've already replaced, which Fiat call "Rod", I had fail on my Alfa GTA (3.2 liter V6). The design of "Rod" is virtually identical to what you see on your engine. I suspect it failed because the garage did not adequately support the engine when they dropped the sub-frame to replace the ARB, but that's another matter. That let the engine hang forward, stressing the "Rod" bush, tearing it under the weight of the motor. The affects of this failure were immediately obvious, i could feel the engine rocking on throttle with a noticeable clunk at it reached the extremes of it's travel. I don't recall any movement in my knob so much as I did the movement in the motor though.

I replaced my rear gearbox mount / engine mount, it was the rod and it's called a rear lower stabiliser.

When this wears it's causing strain on other mounts in the engine bay as the engine is not level and it's rocking, it also puts strain on your down pipe, my 1.2 snapped 3 manicats when my stabiliser had failed...

Hello Guys, thanks for replying in the aid of my jerky knob....!! Apologies for not replying sooner, for some reason I'm not getting alerts.

The stick jerks maybe half an inch to an inch depending on the selected gear. There was an issue getting the 'Rod' off and from what the garage told me the engine was resting on the subframe for a bit. However it's no worse than what it was before. It does jolt a bit sometimes, normally if I take my foot off the accelerator....I'm wondering if it's the main engine mount that needs replacing. I've seen a guide on this but not sure if I want to risk it, so I might buy the part and take it to the garage. How many mounts are there exactly?? Thanks again guys.
