Hi there,

Looking for some advice really. I have a 54 plate 1.9 JTD dynamic stilo, lower wishbone arm has gone for second time in the last year, unsure whether was unlucky with the part or not but bought a new car and now looking to sell my stilo. Car still has mot till jan and has tax but will surrender obviously.

Looking at the option of breaking it as would be worth more. Never done this with a car before, so really looking for advice with process (without sounding naive) I have space for the car for a little while on drive, but wouldn't want to sell a few things then a scrapper not be interested in picking it up?

Looked on ebay and does seem to be a few recent sales of spares, anyone broke a stilo recently and have a good experience?

Thanks for any replies, and if something i haven't thought of feel free to add.

Cheers

Benvo

So long as you've got a comprehensive set of tools, patience and storage space, breaking should be a doddle.
Ideally to be more competitive than someone going to a scrap yard you need to sell some of the more inaccessible parts and drive train they can't normally put in their pockets, but other bits in good condition will sell; parcel shelf, door cards, buttons and switches.
Generally the scrap man would take anything, it just depends is he's paying you or vice versa

Also worth considering the amount of time and effort you are prepared to put into breaking the car into parts to sell..As changing the faulty wishbone and selling car on maybe quicker as it still has mot and tax, plus being a jtd may be a good selling point depending on service history and car condition.
As already posted a scap dealer will take anything usually, even if you are just left with the chassis it is still scrap metal cash in their eyes, some may charge to uplift what is left for you though you can budget for that into what you sell on, the cabin heater blower fan will cover that cost if you decide to break the car and not repair and sell on

Thanks for the replies, i have done a few things to the car over they years (drove 100000 in it) due to the joy of having a fiat. So should be able to get the obvious parts out and places to store the parts.

My turn off on selling the car is for how cheap they go for now, cars got 160000ish miles on. Engines been perfect, problems ive had is with suspension. My worry as same wishbone has gone twice in last year, that if its not a faulty supplier theres something else wrong, and don't want to put any more money into car to find out. Thats why i have been looking to break the car.

Thanks

if you purchased the wishbone at a reputable dealer then it will be under their 12 month warrenty, get it changed.

I had issues with lower wishbones on the n/s kept failing causing the steering to shake violently under braking, the rear rubber mount wasnt up to the job on the diesel, after the 3rd wishbone i got a refund and purchased a OEM one at the main stealers - never had a problem since and that one is now on 40k.
Seems a real waste to scrap a perfectly good car, especially as the stilo was never a popular car so their will be fewer and fewer on the road as time goes on.

ive broken a few cars, but for good reason. I am not so sure your reason for breaking is a good one - if the wishbone has broken, even for a second time, then id get it fixed. It cant be anything else on the car causing the wishbones to break, its probably just defective parts.

I'd be surprised if you get much for the car as a breaker, the bulk of your money will be from selling what's left to the scrappy, and I wouldn't expect much over £130. So, IF you sold parts then you ar elooking at:

interior - £60?
Wings - 30 each?
electrics sucj as window motors etc £various low amounts

you get the idea - I don't see too many people breaking these cars, maybe because too many people are quick to scrap them outright but I do see plenty for sale and values seem ok to me. even if its a high miler, I suspect you would get more selling it as is - let someone else fix the problems but sell the car for a fair price. I think unless you can almost guarantee a minimum value when breaking, its not worth the effort and time.

I'm just speaking from experience, I've broken tree cars now on my drive and all took a long time and the end result was always the scrappy coming to collect the rest and me being left with parts that just don't sell. As an example:

Broke a Mazda MX6 - sold the leather interior, lights from and back, brake callipers and various wiring and the alloy wheels. £150 for the left overs lifted off my drive by the scrapper and around £300 for the parts. that's £450 I made thereabout for a V6 sports car, if I didn't have the expensive alloys and leather interior it would be even less and there aren't many of those cars around.
I also broke a SWB Ford Maverick 4x4, sold a hell of a lot of engine parts, wheels/tyres, interior parts, exhaust etc and these cars are common and easy to sell parts for. I got very lucky with the scrapper and got £250 for the left overs (they didn't know i'd broken it already) all in all I made about £600 on that.
it was a lot of effort, and I still have parts floating around. Knowing the Stilos as I do, I think my choice would be to repair, and sell now.

best of luck with whatever you choose to do.

My main reason for looking down the scrap route, was due to problems with wishbone and condition of the car, of a few scrapes which someone left me in a car park, some lacquer issue. Remote locking via key stopped working. Just thought would be be a effort to sell with condition without someone wanted it really cheap.

As far as wishbone supplier, i have complained, but have a friend who is mechanic fit all my parts so have no invoices and they will just claim not been fitted properly.

Maybe i need to have a re think, just from my ebay completed listed search, seemed to be a few parts sell, for e.g the lights average 25-30 quid each so 120 just in the lights, steering wheel airbag sold for 25, i actually have a spare too as replaced steering wheel when my leather ripped. But not under the impression mine would sell straight away just what gave me idea few things can sell.

Thanks

do you have an idea of how much you want? I think you should decide that first, then let us know!

decide what you want whole, and what you want for scrap. Also, get a quote for the shell picking up from the scrappers. You MIGHT have to tell them you will be removing some parts, but it will give you a ball park figure for the amount you will get for scrap.

it all depends how far you are willing to go. I broke my 02 plate marea weekend 2.0 20v hlx back in 2009, it had only covered 42k, but the engine went pop.... i broke it, the leather i got £150 for, the standard wheels sold for £80, the stilo wheels i had bought sold for £180, the rear beam and rear calipers sold for £80, teh induction kit sold for £50, the whole front end sold for £250, in the end i made £1150 back over a 2 month period, but it was a bare shell, and that i had to pay £15 to get rid of, any left overs i gave to a guy on here.

Well i was thinking around 750 as a working car(wont sure if i was aiming high, but on auto trader they seem to go for a fair amount still, maybe as only a few left)

When i looked on ebay to start with could see a few parts that sold recently and was looking about 550 ish, so thought with other odd bits could maybe get another 200 out of it.

Duno what peoples opinions are of my pricing?

Cheers

If you do decide to break, then offer it to FF menbers first. I definitely need a few parts, and I'm sure I'm not alone.
