Hi there,
I have today test driven a 52 plate 1.6 stilo 5 door car with 64,000 miles on the clock.
Could you please give me some advice before i decide to buy or not?

The engine sounded like a diesel when i first started her up, but quickly became more petrol like.
The engine has got a quiet rattle continuously, very quiet but there, infact making the engine sound quite grunty?
The car drove smoothly, without any bangs or knocks, there is no smoke from the exhaust and steering very light, the engine was very responsive also.
There were no dashboard faults either.

I spoke to the garage mechanic selling the car about the rattle, he said there is a very slight missfire that is causing the rattle and a good service and change of plugs could sort that out?
What are your thoughts?
Is the rattle something to be concerned about?
Have you any ideas what the rattle could be?
I've been offerered the car for £500 with 6 months mot and 2 months tax,
The interior and bodywork are spot on.
Is it worth taking a chance and buying her? Or should i give it a miss?

Many thanks,
Woddy105

the 1.6 has a loud clicking noise, this is the injectors firing, usually a bit louder when cold but soon clears to a constant.
At 500notes its a throw away car and a bargain for 6 months motoring.
The 1.6 tbh is not the best of the collection (search 1.6 gearbox on here), but ok, if your in need of a car this will probally cover all bases.

Thank you roy lovelock,
I agree with 6 months mot its got to be worth giving her a go, when i spoke to the garage mechanic he said all fiat stilo cars are crap and that its mainly the electrics packing up all the time thats given them a bad name.
However she is nice car to drive and i was very suprised.

Any idea how much road tax is on the 1.6?
Also what insurance group?

Cheers,

Thats not a very fair assumption of the cars, while there has been some real horror stories, but the majority of them have gone on to be very good cars, ive ran stilos now for 11 years (owned one from new), while i will openly admit there are some issues with the cars they are certainly not crap.
My current 1.9jtd is 11 years old, has yet to fail an mot and still returns an average of 50mpg -to 64mpg on a long run.
My car has came though 3 newborns (1 set of twins) and many many trips accross the country - it has never missed a beat.
The cars are only really as good as the previous owner, if the car has been maintained well they are generally solid. But with all cars you will come across issues.

After working as a mechanic many years ago i came to the conclusion that mechanics can be very opinionated - i will listen to what they say but generally take it with a pinch of salt - especially when one in particular wanted me to pay 45 quid and a hours labour to replace a standard broken rubber exhaust mount. The same mount cost me 50pence and took me around 10 seconds to fit.

Hi roy lovelock,
I have decided to buy the stilo dynamic and should have it tomorrow, hopefully it will be a decent car for 2 or 3 years.
I think the mechanic just doesn't like fiat cars in general.
This will be the second fiat i've owned, the previous fiat back in the day was a mirafiori 2000 sporting, which was a bloody awesome car, it was like driving a rally car, engine
sounded fantastic.
Thanks for the advice guys.

I wont have abad word said about the Stilo!!!!

I have never had a petrol Stilo so cant say only Diesel, I would save abit more and get a 1.9jtd 8v Bullet proof. theres a thread on here how many miles other peoples stilo have done the jtd is good for 150k plus

Hi paullawton2007,
In an ideal world i would have tried to get my hands on a diesel, but needed a cheap car quickly as wrote off my car recently and needed something for work. I saw the stilo just up the road from where i live being sold by a car repair garage who normally service my car.
He was initially selling it for £750 but had nobody interested in her, i offerered him £500 and he said ok, but did his best to put me off buying the stilo by telling me what a bad car they are.
She has done 64,000 miles, very tidy inside and bodywork all good.
What are your thoughts?
I know that i'm taking a chance, but for the money i couldn't resist. Lol

Cheers,

Thats one thing i was gonna say i have seen a few 1.6 threads and the turnout has been the ECU, cheap run a round. as others say 64k thats not much.

this is the right place if you have any problems:)
Cheers paullawton2007 and bri1232
I agree my thoughts were that 64k is not much at all for a 2003 car, so had to buy her.
Plus the mot and tax.
I am sure i will need plenty of advice in keeping her on the road, as i'm not mechanically minded so could do with finding a decent mechanic good with the stilo in the west midlands.
I pick her up in the morning and will put some pics on.

Thanks again guys,
Woody105
