After looking how the last owner has blanked the egr and removed all the pipes i have noticed at the back under the EGR here the bottom pipe went to is open?

is it a breather? or for the gasses? is it ok and what would people advise on doing?
:confused::confused:
Shes in for two new tyres and abit of tracking tomorrow aswel!

that's definitely not a breather, its part of the EGR system - ive blanked mine, left the pipes in place, and that part you have open is blanked.

I'm no expert, but I'd say it needs blanking!!

that looks like the outlet end of the egr cooler, think of it like a heat exchanger.
if the turbo has a thick blank on the manifold the other pipe is probably off also corregated tube 20-30mm in a 90 bend
its connected in the cooling circuit of the engine coolant and comes off the thermostat housing and probably joins back on just above the turbo manifold egr port.
garage just removed mine while he was in there doing some big jobs and i supplied some 16mm silicone blank ends

it can be left on indefinately but i was worried i was loosing too much heat in reverse and losing mpg from extended coolant heat up time, but ive not noticed much difference now its gone, biggest difference came with new thermostat
even logged and graphed before and after on journy to work

the only risk may be if tubes inside fracture and you loose coolant , but risk is lower now as its not getting hot with egr gas anymore.

mine is now removed completely off car(egr cooler heat exchanger chamber that is) and then the outlet on the thermostat housing(picture is upside down but if you see where temp sensor is its opposite side) has a silicone cap that was originally feeding to the cooler and then another cap on that rail aabove turbo.
i drove for a couple of years as yoiurs is , just blanked at turbo manifold and at inlet manifold and had no issues.
its only cause garage was doing cambelts, waterpump ,thermostat and inlet manifold and already breaking into coolant system i asked them to whip it off.

not really, you can leave it as it is if its got blanks at manifold and egr valve.
the open pipe is now redundant but wont do any harm still being open, the engine coolantis sealed inside the cooler as the egr gas passes through small bore pipes inside.
there will be nothing coming out or going into that open end.
when i get chance ill post some better pics of the inside of the cooler, to help explain.

heres some better pics for you to see whats in there

as said at the minute you have a sealed heat exchanger with engine coolant passing around those tubes inside, the egr gas is no longer passing through those tubes so if open both sides its open to ambient engine bay air temperature.
I can confirm its not really worth the cost or effort to remove the cooler ,as far as expecting quicker warm up times.
