I need a new bearing on the front of the Stilo JTD 2002.
I know someone breaking one. Am I better off just buying a 2nd hand hub, or is it easy enough to change?

Thanks

Fitting the new bearing into the hub carrier is easy enough, but unfortunately, removing the old one is not. Replaced both of mine last year and had to use a local garage's press to remove the old bearings. Gauge on the press went up to 25 tons before the bearing moved.

A second hand hub may have a worn bearing in it. :(

Hmmm, I'll just ask the guy to check the bearing first. Is it easy enough to change the hub then?

Yes... most difficult part is getting the hub nut off. I used a ¾" drive socket set and a 6 foot length of 1¼" gas barrel as an extension. You'll need a 36mm socket with its circumference ground down to fit in the hub flange. The nut is staked into a groove in the shaft, so you need to unstake it before removing it. When refitting it, you'll need a new nut.

Then remove the brake calliper and its mounting bracket, then disconnect everything from the hub carrier. The ABS sensor can be difficult to remove, so better if you can get a complete hub with the sensor still attached to it. Once it's all refitted, the new hub nut needs to be tightened to the correct torque and angle.

What did you get quoted for a garage to do the bearing? My 1.2 I can get a new hub for under £40 and bearing for around the same price from euro car parts. If you garage is charging an arm and a leg tell them to shove it. Mt last car I took the gamble with 2nd hand hub. The bearing was worn but not as bad as what was coming of the car. Bit of a gamble but it was only £20 so could have went either way for beer money.

Is replacing the front bearings just as easy as rear ones? Replaced rear one few weeks ago thinking it was that one making the noise but turns out it's the front ??

No it's not. The rear bearing is supplied complete with the hub flange already fitted, so it's just a matter of removing the old hub and fitting the new one.

The front bearing is supplied separately, so you need a means of removing and refitting the bearing from and to the hub.

Oh damn! So do I need a bearing puller? Do I need to buy the bearing "casette" and the flange?

You'll need more than a bearing puller. It needed a 25 ton press to get mine off. See post 2 above.

On one of mine, the bearing came off complete with the inner race, but on the other, the inner race, stayed on the hub flange and was impossible to get off without damaging the flange. I bought 2 bearings and 2 hub flanges. You also need 2 new hub nuts.

After fitting the new bearing, make sure the circlip is fitted in the correct position.

All very helpful! Thanks Davren I'll let you know how I get on. Do you have a 2003 1.9 jtd multi wagon?

I replace the front hub on my stilo for a second hand one as my holes where the wheel bolts go had been worn. Long story short I had to get a new bearing and got it pressed for 20 quid by a local garage and I removed the hub myself. My advise use ur original hub will be cheaper as you take a gamble on a second hand one
