Hello

Today i had my Fiat 16" alloys fitted on my Stilo. I brought 16 nuts M12x1.25 28mm. They fitted fine on the rear wheels but when fitted to the front they were too long and prevented the wheel from spinning. So the tyre place put the original bolts back on and that fixed the problem. The original bolts are 25mm in length and there was plenty of thread poking through. My old wheels were 15" steels. Is this ok to use these bolts? Would it be best to buy new ones but in the same length?

Thanks

Phil

...odd, but bolts are bolts. Doesn't matter what size wheels you have, so long as they are securely fitted to the hub.

Ay up mate, very quick reply (y)

The tyre place told me to buy 10 or 15mm spacers at first. However they figured even with spacers there would be the same amount of thread poking through. So they just used the original bolts, the head size looks a tad smaller.

I have seen some 24/25mm bolts but for alloys.

What size are your bolts Clive?

The nuts that were on my pug alloys were to short as they were the standard steel wheel nuts. I got a proper set for alloys and the fitted perfect.

See the end of the shaft in this picture how the nut head is flat. That is what I used for the alloys.

And your standard steel ones have a slight tapper.

Now as I say. This was my Pug using pug alloys but worth a look into. Also the tapered ones were cutting a groove in the alloy every time someone had taken the wheel off and tightened again.

heyup Phil!

been ages since I took my wheels off, and as you said NUTs, that was my train of thought-completely forgot these have wheel BOLTS!!

don't use spacers...NO no no no noooooo.

are you saying that when the bolts are fitted, you can see thread?? are the wheels secure? Can you take a photo....

had similar trouble when I fitted spacers with my blades a year or so ago, originals were too short I went std length plus spacer width and then rounded up to nearest length(+a few mm over what I wanted).
was fine on the rear no issue, fitted to the fronts and same wheel wouldn't turn.
realised they were jacking against hub against the flange behind, so had to cut a few mm off the fronts but then to be sure incase a tyre fitter ever switched them I cut them all to the same length fronts and backs.
also I think the head size changed on the longer bolts from 17mm to 19mm as same size head wasn't available ?

No what i meant was when the alloy wheel was off the car, the bloke popped the bolt through the hole. He checked how much of the bolt was at the other end and there was sufficent thread to secure into the hub.

Some pictures. The shorter one was used for the front wheels because the longer ones were too long.

I just want to make sure the shorter one although it fits, is ok to use. I just want to make sure everything is ok as we use the car a lot on the motorway.

oh I see, I understand now!

yeah they should be fine (of course assuming enough thread has gone into the hub!)

what wheels did you have fitted?

These bad boys - 205/55/16. They look mint on my 5 door, totally transforms the car

You experienced any problems with the shorter bolts sussexa? Do you know what length they are? Mine are 25mm at the front.
