Is it safe to remove and blank the egr stillo 1.9 jtd, and any affect on mpg?

Hi Sud

How are you?

I was wanting to know the same thing

My sisters fella blanked mine off last year briefly before I got a new EGR and it ran fine and didn't notice any big difference in MPG - but did wonder if it was doing any damage to the engine

I suspect the replacement EGR is playing up too - so thinking of blanking it off again as the new part hasn't a warranty

None unless your EGR valve is jammed up in which case the car will be undrivable, cleaning the valve sometimes works but not for long in my experience so blank it and forget it is the best option.

hi all after reading post I also have blanked off the EGR but I have had a warning on dash CHECK ENGINE, so I have removed the blank but the warning is still there, sooooooo, does it matter about the warning if the blank is in place? and if the blank is removed how do I get rid of the warning, thanks

Cliff

Hi. You need to get the codes read to see what the warning is for; it may be something unrelated to the EGR.
Did the light come on as soon as you blanked off the EGR or sometime after?
I believe once the fault is rectified the warning light will go out after a few starts.

thanks for the quick reply, as soon as I fitted the blank I took it for a spin. I drove about 3 mile , parked to go shopping and shortly after setting off to come home it came on, I got home ok but was a bit worried so took the blank off again, is it likely to reset after cooling down?

Hi. As I said I believe once the fault that triggered the eml has been rectified a few starts should clear the light.
Did you blank the EGR to fix a fault?

Hi. Very strange I had two Stilo’s (both 115 bhp) one was blanked at about 50000 and was still O.K at 230000, the other was blanked at 65000 and was still going strong at 140000 when I sold it.
Are you getting a message apart from engine fault?

If it's a JTD 8 valve engine, the warning light does not come on after blanking the EGR valve, but it may store a fault code.

If it's a JTD 16 valve engine, the warning light will come on, and it will store a fault code.
.

its an 8V its such a coincidence it happened after I blanked the EGR, took the engine cover off today just to check if I had pulled any wires off etc but all seems ok

I would get the codes read mate if I were you, the EGR fault doesn't usually bring an EML on.

Ive got a permanent P0404 error in mine whether the valve is blanked or not. There's no EML.

Does it go into limp mode after the lamp comes on? If you're losing power maybe it's something more like the turbo boost solenoid faulty, or the pipes to it have rubbed through on the air filter box or something?

All the EGR valve does is feeds the engine it's own crap to lower combustion temperatures, which in turn reduces Nox emissions. So <in theory> higher combustion temperatures over a long period of time could <in theory> cause damage to piston heads etc.

However, I'd wager that an engine running on clean air with proper turbo boost and running correctly is going to last far longer that an engine that is coked up and running poorly due to a knackered EGR.

Best £3.25 I've spent off eBay for a blanking plate.

Also as Davren says above the 8v will not bring an EML on, so you can use a solid blank plate. However the 16v, you can buy a blank plate with four holes drilled in it that doesn't completely block the EGR flow, I fitted it to my Saab 9-3 150bhp tid which had the Fiat 16v engine in it and it made a big difference.

Sorry to highjack but if were to remove the egr completly and blank off just where it connects to the engine and throttle body is the ECU going to throw a hissy when I unplug the EGR. And if it does could this be circumnavigated by simply conntecting the two pins on the connector?

Also if I were to do that any recomendations on a good plate thats not going to burn through. I have some 2? mm stainless in the garage I was going to use, would that be ok?
