Really need some help with a problem with my 53 plate stilo, it's a 1.6 petrol, it is intermittently not starting and randomly cutting out with no notice, regardless if I'm sitting on the motorway or pulling out at a junction, there is all sorts of messages coming up on dash like, loose connection, alternator, temp high, airbag fault, car security, I checked for fault codes and it has u1600 and p1687 stored, any ideas anyone? I've checked battery voltage and alternator is charging, I've put a jump lead from engine to battery negative incase it was a bad engine earth, still he same, I bypassed fuel inertia switch, not that at fault either

I should add I deleted codes and they have not returned, having trouble diagnosing problem as it happens randomly now and again

dont worry too much about the codes they wont be related to your problems. i had something VERY similar mid-late last year. it ended up being the ECU :(

now you have a couple of options. repair or replace.

Repair:- BBA Reman will repair and youll get enough change for a pint out of £250. 5-10day turn around, they offer lifetime warranty for same owner on repaired/replaced parts.

Replace:- source a secondhand/new ECU pricing varies, you will need to get it 'virginised' if secondhand, virginising deletes all the vehicle specific info of the ECU. when you plug it into your car it self teaches at first key on and then its 'locked' to your car (until you get it virginised again). issues with buying second hand... you dont know if that ecu will be any better than the one you took out untill you have bought, virginised and fitted it.

Thanks for the reply guys, yes u think the fix it myself will be the first option lol if that works I will be impressed, I should also mention I had to deactivate the rear tailgate actuator as every time I started the engine the tailgate popped open by itself and I had to get out an close it every time, very annoying

So tried stripping and repairing engine ecu, all looked ok inside and at terminals, cleaned terminals up at ecu, engine bay fuse box, relays, and connector under fuse box, still cut out on me on way to work today, no error codes, and now running fine so unable to diagnose again gggrrrrrr

Stilo intermittant problem

My 2003 1.6 16v stilo is intermittantly not starting/ cutting out randomly, it says loose connection on dash when it does it and temp gauge goes up full then straight back down and give message high temp on dash also, checked an cleaned all connections in engine with no luck, any ideas anyone?

Crank position sensor will give Loose connection fault.

Mine was ok on a short run but prevented restart for 1/2 hour of hot on a long trip.

Cured with new sensor. Get a good one not a cheap one off ebay. I tried that. Lasted 2 days. Never again.

I don't understand why a faulty starter would make car cut out at 80 mph on the motorway? And would faulty crank position sensor not give an engine code? Thanks for replys guys

Spark plug shorting out ecu

Hi guys anyone heard of this before? I was told by a fiat mechanic the cause of my stilo cutting out at random times could be the wrong spark plugs fitte to it, he says the plugs should have a resistor in them and if the correct plugs aren't in it they spike randomly and trip the ecu, and wen I'm turning the key to off then on again that resets the ecu which is why it's starting again straight away,

most common problem with these IAW5NFT1 /T9 ecu's are processor problems due to tiny hair cracks of the small soldering balls underneath the processor. (only visible with magnifying glass)
The proper way to repair this is removing the pcb, removing the processor with infrared station, reballing the pads on the pcb , resoldering the processor with infrared station, resoldering the pcb and resealing the cover.
This requires good skills and tools, not an easy/cheap job !

the mentioned problems with connector pins , spark plugs or crankshaft sensor are less common.

I have an ecu in post which is comin tomorrow, a reconditioned plug and play one which I picked up from ebay with a 12 month warranty for 160 quid delivered, fingers crossed this fixes my problem

I just think i repaired my ecu by taking it to a laptop service and geting a BGA Reballing on the chip, it was cheap and fast 30$ job on a BGA Rework station with IF, Pluged the chip on the car no errors, before repairing was getting :
Alternate. Failure, ASR Failure, ESR Failure, Lose Connection, Engine Fault.

After BGA Reballing:

Ignition is faster, Climate control makes engine go up on RPM, no more errors.

Before you do BGA, check battery voltage: 12.4-8 when its off,,, 14.4-8 when its on.

Errors is not from heat caused by the motor is from the Microchip BGA ( Ball Grid Array ) That in time gets craked from the heat, like a video chip, take a run and ask a laptop service to fix it for u, follow draccoo guide on Fiat Stilo Easy Fix to open it up, tell the service guys they will have to unsolder the pins to get the bord out best of luck.

Hope this helps.

Seems reballing ecu did not help, after sucsesfuly driven 3 hours next morning recieved asr, esp, car security error.
