I am planning on fitting a turbo on my 1.6. any thoughts? and what needs to be done? suggestions?

The engine is a poor base to work from, will need strengthening as per most NA to FI projects plus the gearbox is only a reinforced version of that used on the 1.2/1.4 Stilos so unlikely to be capable of handling the output of a 1.6 turbo.

If you've got the cash then go for it but you will need a lot of supporting mods to make it run, reliably hopefully.

A better starting point would be the 1.4 16v as it's pretty much the 1.4Tjet from the Bravo, you could swap over the internals and turbo etc straight over and map your ecu but then again you have the 1.6 :(

It's identical, apart from the pistons, rods, head, crank, sump, exhaust valves, cams ............ It started out in the same place, then FIAT worked out what they needed to do to keep it in one piece! :D

Even if you can accept the risks, you'll need an ECU that knows about boost, a new exhaust manifold, some way of reducing compression.........

If it's a Stilo, then a Coupe lump will fit. 2 litres will be quicker than 1.6, turbocharged or not.

Yes it is a stilo. I don't need nothing major. just that little push when I press the throttle.. perhaps running it with a 5psi of boost.
Unfortunately coupe's are not that common in where I live, and if I change the engine to a 2ltr one, the liscense will go sky high!

Yes I saw that post of nikos but he spent a lot of money! I was looking for the cheapest option.

Gear ratios don't nessecarily mean its the same box though, I suspect the casing is different, which means its a different box and won't bolt straight on.

When it's got the same gearbox code (C514) as the 1.2/1.4 then I'm sure it is. The 1.6 did have a 6-speed version although not in the uk and still very rare, I suspect the bell housings are different between the 1.4/1.4 and 1.6 to allow it fit.

Going by that it MAY be possible for the OP to fit his 1.6 bell housing onto a 1.4Tjet gearbox...

Usually FIAT give a different part number to the box when it has a different bellhousing.

Still, the 1.4 T Jet 500 (500 Abarth) box is essentially the same one as fitted to the Punto GT, Alfa 155, etc.

Don't know if the Stilo uses the cup type box (like the Punto, Cinq, 500 Abarth, etc. etc.) or a shaft and extra bearing type set up like the other T Jets, MR2s, etc.

I remember seeing another members motors thread where someone fitted a Tjet into an Uno using the Uno Turbo gearbox iirc it wasn't a Tjet box anyway, I've even read of Alfa 6 speed boxes fitting the Abarth Stilos and GTA LSD's fitting the Abarths too so there seems to be a degree of compatibility between the range?

nope i concur when looking to find parts for my 1.6 gearbox the casings and innards are almost the same except for the last casing at the end for the 6th gear.

the shell (the first big one that makes contact with the engine and mid casing are the same and interanals are almost the same give or take a few different gears ratios for the diff models. I ended up putting a doblo gearbox cause i couldnt find a stilo one at the time. It wasnt bad to be honest and kind of liked it it was a tad shorter than the stilo one but when casionally driving i noticed sometimes between 2nd and 3rd gear the gearbox would brake the engine a bit like i pressed on the brakes slightly which was getting annoying. i was even contemplating adding the 6th gear of the 1.2 at the end as a sort of overdrive for the highway.

Also dont expect a turbocharged to come cheaply you need to change the exhaust and exhaust manifold, bigger injectors, change of the exhaust manifold (lancia makes almost an exact metal one to the fiat) and also a change to the intake manifold. Then as we say in greek you marry the car cause it would be a hard sell and you will be requiring maintenance and more tlc than what you are doiong now. im not trying to deter you go for it if you tread along with this in knowledge just know what you are getting into. my opinion is just sell it and buy an abarth or put the abarth engine with all the odds and bits from a crashed car.

Yeah. Our Italian comrade in Udine did some extensive research after blowing his C510 box here to bits.

Looks like (towards the end of the post) there are 3 different boxes in the TJet: the Alfa box, as fitted to the 500 Abarth, 155, etc. etc. (convention, unequal length driveshaft box with cups), a Mitsubishi box with the crossover shaft, another box with the crossover shaft.
