I have just bought my first Stilo Abarth.
Nice car

The thing is, I have found a few problems with her already.
I'll list them in separate threads as they aren't related.

I drove the car home (around 1.5hrs) and the temp gauge was showing cold.
The heaters were working lovely.
I also noticed that the temp gauge hadn't reached the middle at any stage. It went up to quarter max I think.
Car runs fine though.

May not be a big deal, but I'd like some peace of mind.

Thanks

It can be a big deal, the coolant wont be getting fully upto temp, i dont know what adverse affects it can have. gadge had recent experience of changing a thermostat on a 2.4, i dont think he found it too hard.
But let him see this first.
For the price of a genuine fiat thermostat i would buy one, they tend to last longer than cheaper ones.
But as jamescollins1 said it should sit bang on half way and maintain that temperature, no flucuations unless it raises when you are sat in traffic then the fan will cut in and lower it again.

OK, thanks mate. I'll wait to see what your mate says before changing it then.
Nice 1 (y)

Hi jack, yes it sounds like your thermostat is paggerd. The symptoms you describe are very much the same as what I had at the start of last month. In my case I noticed just after the hot weather we had in the summer that it was taking longer to reach the middle (as stated above the needle should sit bang in the middle after about 5-6 minutes). Eventually it wouldn't even get past the "c" if I had the heater on.

How much does it cost? Well The thermostat will cost you between £55-80 depending on what make you choose. Don't be tempted by anything cheaper as the quality won't be as good and it's false economy to fit a cheap one only for it to fail 2 yeas down the line. I fitted a facet one I bought of eBay which I thought looked excellent when compared to the original fiat one but if your in any doubt then buy a genuine fiat one (y) ...... Oh and the fiat coupe 20v thermostat is not the same as the Stilo 20v they maybe cheaper but there different.

Can I you fit one at home? If your ok with the spanners then yes deffinatly :) it's located at the top of the head on the right side by the battery. There's about 5 hoses of various sizes that need to be disconnected which can be fiddley as you have to break the clips to remove them (make sure you have new jubilee clips at hand to replace them with) then it's just three 13mm bolts and that's it. You'll need to transfer the temp sensor over but I fitted a new one.

Hope that helps (y)

Brilliant. Thanks mate.
Just looked on the bay. There's a First Line one for £64.
Can't believe how much they are to be honest. But got to be done.
Thanks again.

Sounds like the thermostat may be stuck open!

:yeahthat:

Can I still drive it around safely before I fix it?

Yes, but I'd get it changed ASAP, will be using more fuel and I've even seen on here that the heat cycling of not reach full temp can do the head gasket in, although not sure what truth there is in this.

Yeah there a little pricey :D there quite a big unit too. It cost me roughly £100 to do when you add the coolant, new clips and a new temp sensor lol.

Getting it sorted sooner would be better as the engine won't be reaching optimum temperature which is best for lubracation and fuel eccomony. Especially in this cold weather

Aye, didn't think of that. What coolant do I need? Do I need a new temp sensor as well?

The trickiest part doing the abarth was removing the air ducting. Like doing the Rubix cube. For the bolts holding thermostat on I bought a ring spanner ($12) with a deep offset that made the job a lot easier. Couldn't get a socket on them due to gearbox components getting in the way.

Best to use the opportunity to change the coolant for fresh anyway.
