Technical starter motor

Give it a whack with a tire iron, normally helps, or move the rotor a bit. :slayer:

Re: jtd starter motor

anybody changed one? got any tips?

Starter motor comes out from underneath the car. One of the three bolts that hold it to the gearbox bell housing is a little tricky to get to, and you may need to take the dipstick tube off. Be careful not to damage the crankshaft sensor which is immediately above the starter motor.

Disconnect the battery first, because the main +ve cable will be hanging once it's been disconnected from the starter motor. ;)

ta davren i had that figured out thing is not a lot of room/access to get the old one out was wondering if theres an easy method of removal as im going to have hell of job undoing top bolt as my arm dont fit in the gap available so im thinking undo engine mounts to gain a bit of play (but can you fix contacts in solenoid?)

I don't think undoing the engine mountings will give you any more space.

I removed my starter motor when I replace the clutch and DMF a while ago without disturbing the engine mountings. The top starter motor bolt needed a 3/8th drive 13mm socket and extention bar just longer than the body of the starter motor. Any shorter and I couldn't turn the ratchet handle because the starter motor body was in the way. Any longer and I couldn't turn the ratched because of lack of space at the back of the motor.

Take the top bolt out first so the starter motor is still fixed solid to the engine/gearbox. Once the bolt is loose, you can wind it out by hand with the extention bar. If you take the bottom bolts out first, the motor will be hanging on the top bolt so you would need to use the ratchet on it all the way out.

You can't dismantle the solenoid because the canister is swaged together. Unlike early Fiat solenoids that were bolted together.

thanks davren no guide on this and not much info either, rain forecast for Saturday too. also how would i find out what vehicles across the fiat range share the same starter motor?

Right - I've had a go today - can I get that top bolt out?! NO!!!!

Is the consensus a 3/8ths 13mm socket on an extension? I got a spanner to it but it was so bleedin tight and all I got was sliced knuckles and a face full of dirt.

Also, I can see the one obvious bolt, the top one I'm struggling with, where is the third?

I'm seriously considering letting a garage change it over - how many hours would I pay for? Just the one to undo and refit a new one?

As I posted above, you need a socket and extension bar exactly the correct length for the top bolt.

Can't find a picture of where the bolts are. Picture below from when I replaced my clutch and DMF. It shows the starter motor holes in the engine to gearbox plate viewed from the gearbox end. May give you an idea of where the bolts are. Red arrowed one is the difficult one at the top of the starter motor. The 2 yellow arrowed ones should be easily visible from under the car.

Cheers Davren.
To be awkward - roughly how long an extension bar do I need?
Halfords only seem to sell a long one so I'm going to buy one online!
Is 75mm going to be ok or shorter?

75mm is too short. Think I used a 6 inch extension bar. It needs to go from the bolt head to behind the solenoid. Otherwise you won't be able to turn the ratchet handle because the solenoid will be in the way.

Weather depending, Sunday. I'll get the camera charged up and see what I can do!
How the bloody hell did you reach it from the top? I imagine half of you was in the engine bay?

Failed attempt number 2. :cry::cry::cry:
Garage next week! I might ask the mechanic not to put the difficult bolt back in, just in case it ever needs changing again (assuming he gets it out)
