Hi guys, I can't remember if this is my first post or not. I browse the forums regularly but don't post. Hello!
Anyway. I'm currently having some issues with my car. I was recently greeted to a loud clacking noise from my engine and discovered that my drive belt has split. It's currently hanging on by a few threads. Now the garage asked me if my car has Air Con, presumably because the belt length would vary depending on whether I have AC or not. I said that it didn't. To save on costs I thought I'd source the parts myself (especially as it's Christmas! Great timing!) and when browsing through my handbook to see if I could find a hint on what size belt my car requires I noticed an illustration of a button that my car has. The button has a picture of a snowflake on it, and the handbook defines it as 'manual climate control'.
Now, is this the same as air conditioning? And by having a manual climate control button, does that mean that I require a drive belt that is A/C compatible??
I've had this car 2 years and never even pushed the button! I assumed it was something to do with freezing conditions or something!!
Cheers guys

Thanks Davren. I'm surprised! 2 years I've had this car and never knew that I had air conditioning. In a way I wish I didn't... It's another thing to go wrong with this bloody car. Especially as I've not used it which means it's probably all gunged up!
Okay, my engine number is 192a1000. Just throwing that out there.
Does the belt drive the Power Steering or is that electronically controlled? If not, am I correct in assuming that I just need a belt to accommodate the Alternator and the Air Conditioning?

Engine code 192A1000 is a JTD 8 valve engine.

The auxilliary drive belt goes around the crankshaft pulley, alternator, air conditioning compressor, 1 automatic tensioner pulley and 2 guide pulleys as in the diagram below.

The power steering is fully electric using an electric motor mounted in the steering column behind the steering wheel. It will only work if the alternator is charging, so if the auxilliary drive belt breaks, the power steering will immediately stop working. (Not good if you're making a turn at the time).

Devren you've been a great help. Do you think you could point me in the right direction for what belt I need? A quick search on eBay and I found this: ht.tp://bit.ly/18wHczS.
(Please remove the fullstop between http as I am not allowed to post URL's due to my post count)
There seems to be so many variations, 815mm, 819mm, and other numbers that all seem different from one another. I'm at a loss as to which model I need.
Thanks a lot

819mm seems too short for the auxilliary belt for a JTD with air con.

If you want to PM me your VIN (left click on my username to the left of this post and select "Send a private Message to Davren", I'll get the Fiat part number for your belt. From that, you can get comparison numbers for an aftermarket belt.

ah i see thanks mate

so how does it work, is there much of a difference

or is it just a matter of heating on and if you want more push the button, same with cold air?

Well, it helps dry the cabin out as it is a dry air from air con.
But yes, in the summer people mainly use it because its so much cooler thanks to the gas, i dont notice a difference on the hot side of things but use the aircon at least 3 times a week to keep the system fresh and lubricated.

I wouldn't suggest using yours without a re-gas and using a air con cleaner as there will be a lot of bacteria in the system and it will smell.
Mine smelt when i first got it so i bought a cleaner and use the air con regularly and it hasnt smelt since.

can any garage recharge the system?
where is the tank in the engine?
and should there not be a second rad?

Find a garage that will do one, i know garages like ats and kwik fit should do it, expect fo pay about £50.
I don't know where the tank is ;) but they fill it up by two pipes in the top left hand corner of the engine bay.
You will have a condensor, yes, itll be in front of the rad so you wont see it unless the bumper is off.
