Hi hope some one can possibly shed some light on my currents problems.

These are the symptoms and occurrence of events -

Two weeks ago last drove stilo all was fine on journey outward but when I left friends house turned key and it cranked but didn't start on first key turn second turn started fine thought nothing of it, car had been sat at friends for about 3 hours. It's done this once before but not taken any notice of it.

This week on monday went to start stilo got in turned key battery flat would only just turn over but wouldn't start... ok I thought battery knackered fair enough it's five years old time for new one... new one ordered varta silver(http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281219458825?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649)

fitted battery today went to start stilo engine cranks but doesn't start. engine turns over with more umph than ever before so I am pretty sure battery has enough charge.

No other symptoms since car was last running fine, no errors coming up on dash, not plugged fiat scan in yet so unsure if fault codes are stored.

Any ideas?

thanks

starter motor sticking?

ignition switch?

glow plugs?

fuel rail? fuel filter? CKP sensor?

personally id get the laptop hooked up to it, and see what it registers when you try to start it

reading through some old posts it looks like the crank rpm sensor may need to be replaced, does anything show up on fiat ecu scan if that is the case?

has any one managed to replace this working from above as where my car is stuck getting access underneath isn't possible(slight slope pointing down hill against a curb)

changed the fuel filter still no go, going to try spare key in a bit, starter motor working fine, not checked fuel rail or glow plugs yet.

will connect up laptop and see what it shows.

good luck, it has to be fuel related somehow. If it was glow plugs, youd have a dash warning, but the glow plugs heat the fuel, so maybe fuel isn't getting to the plugs!

these are the fault codes that came up -

cleared faults then retried key and only the injector faults kept coming back after each attempt.

i tried the spare key first and that didn't work either.

any ideas?

am i right in thinking that if the ecu scan shows an engine rpm while cranking then the crank sensor is working ok?

whats with the u1600 imobilizer ? has that definitely gone now you've cleared
as id expect that to stop the injectors firing.
not sure where the car receiver is for the key transponder, most are around the barrel, but have you tried holding spare key around closer to the barrel.
what happens when key battery dies ?
I remember my key not working after a few years and swapped to a spare that worked and been using ever since , don't remember replacing battery in old one.

yep cleared fault and it hasn't appeared since on any of the attempts to start car.

problem solved, checked all the relays and fuses by the battery took them all out one by one gave them a squirt of wd40 pushed them in several times one large black one in the middle had a lot of green gunk on the connectors cleaned it off put the relay back in and it started straight away.

any one know what that relay does? i'm assuming something to do with injectors or pump?

Large 50Amp relay (T7) in the centre of the engine compartment fuse box is for the engine cooling fan. That shouldn't stop the engine from starting.

Also, relay T7 shouldn't be fitted in a 115hp JTD. The fan is controlled by an ECU in the back of the fan cowling and doesn't have a relay.

interesting i'll have to take a pic of my fuses/relays some when and post it on here.

Below is a diagram of the engine fuse box with relay T7 fitted.

It should only be fitted to cars with the 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 and JTD 16 valve engines.

I believe the relay numbers (Tx) are moulded into the top of the grey engine fuse box adjacent to the relay sockets, and/or the underside of the large black plastic battey cover.
