Ohh noo not an oil thread lol... I agree with Gadge all the above are fine, but my personal opinion is that the stated 10/40 isn't good enough quality, and 10/60 is too thick for winter months, everyone has their own opinions and that's mine, and like Gadge I use 5/40 fully synthetic in mine, halfords own make as it was on offer last time!

Yeah I've always thought that too hence why I use the thinner stuff (coincidently halfords fully synth too lol) and never had a problem :) 0w40 is possible too as another member yellowperil is a firm user of it (y)

I nearly did try the 5w50 stuff but thought the 5w40 was a good compromise to 10w40

I've heard of people running that, it's mobil one new life isn't it? 0w40 I spent ages trying to decide (bit sad I suppose lol) funny the 5w50 came up, I was looking at comma track oil yesterday, only £27 for 5 litres, I am tempted as I'm due an oil change soon, but I've never had a problem with the 5w40, and as they say, "if it ain't broke don't fix it"

Im jtdm 16v , so spec is 5w40
Ive run 0w40 mobil no problem, and next summer will change to a 5w50 or a blend of both as i picked up some cheap mobil 5w50 but theyre only 4l bottles.
Might mix 50/50 and end up with a 2.5w45 or therabouts.

5w40 is that a special oil for diesel of the same for petrol? just that i run our petrol picasso on 5w40 fully synth and that would be handy having the same oil for both

I believe the 5w/40 I bought for the schumy was for petrol and diesel

yes original spec was selenia wr 5w40 for diesel the fiat book says
selenia k 5w40 for petrols
I use mobil 1 where I can and I suppose im using the petrol version as there is a turbo diesel version but I never see that on offer.
the turbo diesel oils usually have a different blend of additives like detergents and something to help soot particles stay suspended etc
I have have no egr and usually don't do more than 5-6000miles a year that's why im not bothered about using specific turbo diesel stuff, most oil nowadays say they'll do both.
might think different if I was doing the 30,000km 2 year change.

I don't mean to hijack this thread but i have a quick question. I am going to give my car an oil change in January and am thinking about using Shell Fully Synthetic 5w40 (i'm using Shell Semi Synth 10w40 at the moment). Is 5w40 better for winter as it's thinner? My car is a JTD.

Thanks

Phil

Yes fully synthetic better than semi.
Yes 5w40 better than 10w40 in winter.
Yes its thinner at colder temps so flows quicker and might see better mpg.
The vauxhauls have gone 5w30 for mpg i think
As said above ive run 0w40 for many years and oil changes.
I think argo on here runs 0w30 or has done.
Maybe at worst a thin 5w or 0w may sound a bit tappetty due to the thinness.
Choose an oil that suits your driving, journey and change frequency.
If you do long drain or alot of miles between , probably best to go dedicated turbo diesel oil as well as the 5w40.

I've been using 5w30 full-synth in my JTD for a couple of years, after scoring a bargain price for 50l. It seems to work perfectly well.

I'm not convinced that the grade matters much. Good quality full-synth and frequent changes are more important.
