See the metal band or "clip" that I've highlighted in the attached picture (which I lifted from eBay, by the way :)).

Does anyone know what the purpose of this is? My guess is that it's used to fasten the heat shield, am I right?

Thanks.

I don't suppose anyone knows whether the two holes on the lower end of the heat shield (see the attached pic, again lifted from an eBay ad) are used to fasten the heat shield somehow? If so, what is it fastened to? Or do these holes serve no such purpose at all?

Yup... there should be studs in the manicat. The sheild locates on the studs and then its a nut and washer/flange nut to secure

I know there are three studs at the top of the manicat, but I cannot see anything at the bottom?

Takker/thanks :). From what I can tell, my heat shield does not have a bolt where the "bolt 2" arrow is on your picture, and I wonder if that may (at least partially) be the reason why I have this very annoying resonance at ~ 2800 RPM that nobody seems to be able to locate the cause of...

I think there's a bracket bolted onto the engine block. Should have asked last week - had my car on the ramp refitting these very bolts after a head rebuild & could have checked!
