Re: electrical madness!

According to the Stilo handbook, the 5 door tail lights and rear fog lights share a twin filament bulb as in you bulb picture above, not the tail lights/brake lights as you mentioned. I can't check it on my car because mine's an estate with different rear lights..

Check that you have the corect bulbs in the correct bulb holders.

Ah I see so brake lights are good apart from the middle one on the tailgate. And the non working ones are fogs/tail lights. I wasnt sure because have only just got the car and every other car ive had brake and tail lights share the bulb with 2 filaments. All bulbs are in the right place. going to get a multimeter on it when I get a chance never used one though so any tips would be great. I usualy try and stay away from electrical faults if I can. Thanks again

Re: electrical madness!

To test for power, set the multimeter to 20 volt DC and connect the black negative lead from the meter to a good clean earth point on the car. Usually, the boot lock stirrup is OK for the earth connection.

Use the red positive lead from the meter to probe the wires in the wiring connectors. The meter should show about 12 to 13 volts depending on the car's battery voltage when the circuit is switched on and 0 volts when switched off.

Re: electrical madness!

the 2 highlighted in yellow are what I think are supposed to be fogs light up when I hit the brakes and only the left 1 lights up with headlights on. both the reverse light and indicators work perfectly. both the rear lights highlighted in white are the tail light/brake light bulbs with the 2 pins like the picture below

Top ones are the brake lights on facelift Stilo and are a single filament 21watt bulb, at the bottom are the tail & fog lamps, and are a twin filament 5/21 watt bulb with the 5watt being for the tail light and 21 for fogs.

Looks like you're getting your bulbs confused.

2 posts up mate already worked that out usualy tail and brake lights are on the 2 filament bulbs

cheers:D did this today and have managed to sort the middle break light and the fog lights, but still don't get anything on the tail light which is the same bulb as the fogs. when I turn headlights on I get 0 volts to the tail lights but I don't think its the stalk because when I unplug the fog/tail bulb a brake light lights up in its place:bang:. what do you think I should try now???

Should be the same fuse I believe. Next step would be to plug the car into MultiECUscan.net software and check the body computer for errors, it'll let you undertake tests and operate the lights naturally also, so worth giving it a play. Failing that main dealer could do it for you, but won't be cheap :(

Would hate to have to go stealers for the tail lights. Ive sorted all other problems oncluding abs. Sure il find it eventually just a bit time consuming thats all. Cheers

right another update. have just noticed that the n/s sidelights are not working either but the o/s are. so does that that mean that the fault will be somewhere between the o/s and n/s sidelights. the bulbs are ok have changed them so its not the bulbs. put a multimeter on the n/s and am getting a big fat 0v. any ideas where the problem would be???????

It's sounding more and more potentially like the body computer :(

EDIT: At the point this occurred the indicator stalk wasn't in the 'indicate right' position and using the 'parking light' feature was it?

No I tried that aswell. Getting pretty fed up now. So if the body computers knackered would there be any other symptoms and how much to fix. I think you might be right though because I dont get no bulb warnings on dash now unless sidelights arent checked. Is there any way that I can wire the n/s sidelights and tail lights to the working o/s sidelight

I personally wouldn't, as the car has been designed and built to all work on separate feeds as its canbus controlled.

I'm not sure if a replacement used body computer has to be coded to the car or if its plug and play - there is some info about it somewhere on the forum iirc.

Could probably get a replacement from a scrappy for about £30ish.

cheers mate will have a look into it. Would the canbus still check the sidelights if the body computer knackered?? The reason I ask is because when I unplug the bulb I get 12 volts but as soon as I plug it back in 0v and was wondering if it was the canbus checking for a bulb??

That'll probably be the canbus checked for a bulb like you say. Will probably have been a very low load if checked on a multimeter.

Re: electrical madness!

not sure if this will help, earlier you said your dash was staying lit,i had this problem which kept draining the battery. i solved it by putting in a fused link between f53 fuse and f51 under the dash, this wires the dash lights and computer to the ignition rather than a direct feed. this means comp, clock etc will reset everytime you turn off which for me was no hardship,it also sorted annoying warnings out too, including rear light fail
