Hi guys,

Does anyone know the maximum allowable leak back for a 115 JTD injector? Would excessive leak back affect starting in freezing temps (even though in warmer temps its flawless?)

And while we're on the subject, is it possible to recondition an injector yourself or is it definitely a job for a professional injector reconditioner?

hi zen!
i dont know the exact figure for leakoff volume but most, if not all, leakoff testers compare each cylinder against each other. you will usually find one is WILDLY out when measuring.

excessive leakoff wouldnt just give poor starting in cold conditions, it'd happen all the time... from what little i do know about the 'oil burners' its much more likely to be a glowplug.

as for injector reconditioning... i think your safest bet would be to get it done professionally, im not saying its something that you couldnt do but i personally wouldnt trust my self on new technology. the tolerances are soo minute that any tiny bit of crap can goose an injector nowadays.

this is my jtdm 16v but values may be similar.
This is what i had with 5 mins idle

And this was 2mins at 2000 revs

this was video for rough speed of fuel amount at idle

Ill try to find actual values for you
here are some data sheets for injector tests(off car on test bench)
comparing a known 115 8v I think 0445110111 and mine 0445110243
0445110111 inj.png
111 test.png
0445110243 inj.png
243 test.png
so you can see values are different by small amount on leak back so the 8v should leak back similar values to mine on test on the car?
hope this helps
as above cant see leak off affecting cold starts more than hot
also injector rebuild requires calibration afterwards so specialist only
glow plugs and maybe coolant temp sensor worth checking.
I would expect glowplugs to have a resistance of around 0.8 ohms or thereabouts.

Thanks guys, that was really helpful (y)

Yeh, I couldn't understand why an injector with excessive leakback would cause bad starting on cold mornings when its fine any other time (and fine once started) but I'm seriously running out of ideas! :( Fortunately it hasn't got bad *yet*, but then it hasn't been any lower than 3c yet. It had a slight hiccup starting the other morning when it was cold and it just brought back memories of the nightmare I had last winter with cold starts... I was never sure I completely solved it as the weather started to warm up anyway so the improvement could have just coincided with that. I may be just paranoid :rolleyes: But so far, I've had;

- New Bosch Battery (can't remember the capacity/CCA but its more than sufficient)
- New NGK glowplugs which have been tested to ensure they are actually heating during preheat
- New crankshaft sensor
- Swapped out MAF/intake temp sensor (also tried disconnected)
- Blanked EGR valve
- Service with new oil, oil filter, fuel filter and air filter
- Clear braided fuel hose on return pipe with a one-way valve to see if air was getting in to the fuel system backwards overnight

And just this week new MAP and coolant temp sensors (although the old ones gave back plausible readings anyway.)

Anyway, back to the original leakback thing... injector 2 is leaking back almost twice as much as the others, but they were all faster than I'd expected (although its the first time I'd done one so I had no experience to judge against.) Didn't measure it since as soon as the engine fired up, my containers fell over  but I could tell by the rate it moved up the pipe, injector 2 was leaking back much quicker.
