Hi does anybody know what the point of this bushing is on the driveshaft, and is it a mot fail if its busted? Iv never seen something like this.

The one on the left is the broken/separated one on my car, and the right is to get some perspective.

I bought the car with some problems but if my cables ever arrive I can start using multiecuscan to fix it. Luckily underneath there only seems to be this and a rear exhaust hanger that needs attention.

I've always known it as a balance weight - found on the longer RHS shaft only - so makes some sense,

MOT -wise,
no idea, perhaps if it's OBVIOUSLY insecure you may have a problem..,

otherwise just an advisory..depends on tester..??

Cheers I thought it was some sort of counter weight/balance but didnt really understand how it would make a big difference. So do you think there is a bigger problem if this is broken?

I hope it doesnt mean replacing the driveshaft. With retest its a 30 euro gamble, so i guess it would be better to just do it...although thats nearly the price of a badgeless grill
 
does it actually move around..??,I suspect it's just the rubber has aged and broken down,
if it still seems stuck in position I would get a sharp knife out , tidy-up the sheared edge,
and move the clip form the "lonely" bit and put onto the remaining weight..cutting the "spare remains" off,

I think the theory is that they are a vibration damper and they somehow help against torque steer. Usually only fitted onto the longer shaft. ePER shows only on the right shaft.

If is is secure, I don't think the MOT tester will look at it. If it is moving around on the shaft, may be considered a problem. Damper not available separately, but a reconditioned shaft is. Do as suggested by Varesecrazy.

Thanks Varesecrazy I like the suggestion il try that tomorrow. If the testers dont see a broken part they hopefully will look over it. It isnt loose at all.

That ePER site is great! I will be all over this for the next 2 weeks getting it ready.
I cant download the elearn manuals either for some reason. Will have to go back for another shot. But tbh someone has usually done it before so the search function throws it up.

A quote from a Rover technical training course from 1990 (Yes, sadly I haven't thrown them away)
"A rubber damper unit is fitted to each driveshaft to damp out harmonic vibrations"
That's from the Rover 200 Mk2 from 1989. It is more usual to fit only one damper, to the longer driveshaft. Without it the car is likely to experience some driveshaft vibration. If it made no difference, the manufacturer would have saved the costs. An aftermarket driveshaft, without the damper is probably not good enough.
 
So I went to fix this today and theres not enough rubber to secure it with a jublie clip or something like it. - Edit; its also moving - So I am thinking I might risk cutting and remove it all together for the test and then buy a used r/h driveshaft. Problem is there will be a clear difference of dirt where it was for the tester and he might put it together.

I can get one tomorrow from a 1.2 stilo, I have a 1.6. Does anybody know if it will be ok?

ePER shows different part numbers for 1.2 and 1.6. CV joint and hub are different, the shafts may be different too. Used shaft unlikely to fit, but damper may be transferrable, but may be different. Ideally need to get a 1.6 one.

Thanks for replying. It would of been too lucky for it to fit. I had a quick browse on ePER but could not locate it. I got to get used to that.

I got the car last week cheap as a fixer. Happy so far. Was able to rid it off airbags fault quite easily. Needed one or two other things like this done too. Im just finding Stilos impossible to find in breakers! And im sure its not because their all on the road still:D

then 27402 Axle shafts
Subcategory: 27402/00 M1 1.2 & M10 1.6

If that seems simple, don't beat yourself up about it. I've spent a lot of my life around car parts listings and I'm still learning.
 
So after finally tracking one down - which turned out to also have a broken bushing - I was given a 1.6 brava one instead and was told would be the same, with working bushing.
I also picked up a spoiler for a tenner so it was a half successful trip....

So im trying to get the current driveshaft out to compare e two and its completely stuck on the gear box side. Free from the hub easily and Iv hammered and rotated it in every possible combo. Any advice?
