Hi everyone,

I noticed today, after quite a long drive, that on idle and around 1000-2000 rmp.. there is a sort of plasticcy sounding tapping coming from the general belt area. the tapping does alter with the amount of revs. Its not a metallic tapping.. it sounds as if its a bit of plastic that is catching on something. I had a look round but everything looked fine. There are no squels or anything from any of the pulleys. Any ideas?

TIA

Maybe the bottom pulley is worn usually start about 80/90 000.

They start off tapping when the engine is cold and gradually get worse until they do it all the time.

Ill get a mechanic friend to have a look. You could be right. I literally passed 70,000 yesterday.
It's a really odd ticking. Doesnt sound like metal, sounds like a floppy piece of plastic is catching on something, thats the best way I can describe it.

If it is a pulley, is it a big job? And will I need to take a bank loan out? ha

Thanks

Hi. The last time I did a pulley on a jtd it was about £90to buy (main dealer) easy job about 30 minutes.

Just a quick question , if it is a pulley, is it okay to drive until I can get it done? Or is it something that could just go an leave me sitting at the side of the road for 5 hours?

TIA

If it is the pulley and you continue to drive the noise will become greater and nothing disastrous should occur!

Thanks for that. I'll try and get a video of it today or something. It's just I've got quite a bit of running about to do this week so.
Thanks

Managed to get a bit of an audio recording of it here :
I put the camera on the drivers side front wheel.. and it fell off at the end.. but you can here the sort of tapping I am talking about. Give give the video a few seconds as I was having to get back into the car.

TIA.

Sorry for posting again, but I've been having a look at a few other forums, and something that keeps coming up is the VLA? Valve Lash Adjuster? I don't know. Someone said that if you keep running it when that isnt right it can seriously mess everything up. Thing is, I don't really have any money, and I really need my car a lot for the foreseeable future.

I asked a friend of mine whether he thought it could be a pulley, but he wasn't sure whether thats the sort of sound a pulley makes..

I had a very similar noise when the alternator freewheel pulley failed. Remove the covers and watch the moving aux belt, if it's jumping and shuddering then the alt pulley is worth checking.
