I am thinking of getting my standard Stilo Schumacher Alloys refurbished & possibly going for a gunmetal finish. Before I commit I am looking for a fail safe way of removing the plastic centre cap without damaging either the cap or more importantly the alloy. I've fashioned a number of tools from bicycle plastic tyre levers but they are not the greatest. Any ideas?

the hubs on the Schumacher are approx. 140mm and cover the wheel studs, so they need to come off to remove the wheel

Standard Abarth wheels (blades) have a similar situation. I use a small stubby flat-blade screwdriver with masking tape wrapped around the blade.

Here's the trick - rather than trying to lever the cap off (which doesn't work very well, it just distorts the cap and the screwdriver slips and scratches something), I put the screwdriver in and then pull the small, stubby handle (holding it like a gearknob) outwards (sideways) against the back of the cap, without levering, while keeping my other hand on the centre of the cap - otherwise, the cap flies off and skips across the floor.

It's one of those tricky-sounding things that might deserve a 'world's most boring YouTube video' - sorry I'm not at home at the moment, so can't oblige
