Tuning The perfect exhaust system?

Tuning The perfect exhaust system?

morning Gadge!
id love to post a long reply about how back pressure, exhaust velocity and flow capacity effects performance but, you know what... i really cant be arsed this morning.

here's a link to act as surrogate Rich that pretty much explains what i think you're after. Its not in depth or lengthy but it covers all the obligatories, and brushes on scavenging. Also a little foot note, touches on 'tip tuning' which changes the sound of your exhaust note, when you read it you'll undertand, but as a man with many talents i didn't realise that even the tip of the exhaust could make such a difference to exhaust tone.

EDIT:- found these guys too Longlife Exhausts according to their website theres a branch in Northampton and one in Brum, probably worth at least an email. they offer a transferable lifetime warranty (maybe a pro selling point in the distant future) and say that their attention to detail is thier main aim... as so many aftermarket exhaust companies do.
enjoy

Just got a quote from longlife today. From cat down is £299. Booked mine in for next weekend, iv heard lots of good things about them

Haha no unfortunately insurance company would have a heart attack if I tried to insure one of those! It's a 1.6 but I could show the results when it's done anyway

I don't suppose yours is a 2.4 is it Williams89 :D if it is I'ld love to see a video on it to hear what it sounds like (y)

Hi Gadge (y)

I cant find a video at the moment but I did find these for you :) do you remember them?

Hey Phil! :D yes I do remember but sadly I never had the pleasure of hearing it? I wish I'ld bought it off you before you sold the car  do you remember any power or torque gains?

Hello mate :)

I never had the car road tested after this mod so no hard proof in the likes of stats and figures but a 100% statement is that this beast can do without the second cat :D not only do you open up the vocal cords of this fine Italian 5 pot 20v engine but you also give the car a less restricted exhaust system, in some ways you could say a slight improvement in overall performance (y)

I can only say that the car, from what I recall, sounded and felt a hell of a lot better after the new exhaust system was put in place. This was a basic kit which simply removed the second cat, had a smaller middle silencer and rear back box fitted. Trust me once you have that the second cat removed you will understand what i mean, its really weird to describe but the car seems to breath better???? lol anyhow go for the full works what ever your choice and post the pics, in the mean time if i find a video I will be in touch :)

Keep in touch Ande (y)

Nice one mate :D I always thought there were deffinatly some gains from dropping that 2nd cat as I've read elsewhere that this is a worthwhile mod to do and it kind of does make sense really, catalysers are known for their restrictiveness.

What I guess I really want to know is how many and indeed what size of boxes were needed after the cat. I was toying with the idea of not having a centre box but instead having a straight pipe with two boxes either side of the car at the back. So it would still have two boxes but at the back of the car instead (y)

mate just take the cat out , middle box out and back box out then you will have that Awsome 20v sound just burbling away :)

is there no custom makers around you , I know the places up by me you can tell them what sort of note you want how loud you want it and were you want it ( then they shaft you and take your money (y))

Imo id go for a SS Full system with no middle box , it wont be that loud with no middle section and a nice back box with twin tips (y)

Yeah there are a few around me - I think there's a longlife not far from my folks home. I'm just trying to get a good idea of what I want before I go in there. I'm also concerned that if I go to one of these places they'll just try and blag me and just fit a system that won't be any better than what I have. Getting some good ideas on here though (y)

Hello mate

The twin exhaust back box would look and sound very nice for sure, one thing to bear in mind bud, underneath the rear drivers side of the car there is no room for a second back box from what I have been told and seen and if you really wanted to have a second exhaust box fitted you would have to make some compromise by removing a chunk of the rear metal hub where you spear wheel fits in
Stu/ Volxstu tried to have a twin back box system fitted to his Schumey but he chose not to in the end as he did not want to drive around with no spare wheel, he ended up with one rear back box with a twin exhaust tip and an adjacent twin exhaust tip with a straight pipe feed instead.

One other thing mate is that, for you this upcoming mod is performance driven so in attempting to fit a second back box you could potentially jeopardize the overall BHP gain with some extra weight at the rear :)

I must admit bud I hav'nt as yet stuck my head underneath to see the room or lack of room in this case so you may well be right. One thing for sure is that I won't be having a pipe feed to the other side to make it look like there's another box there as I'm not a fan of imitation stuff like that so I'll probably end up with just a single 3 inch pipe and a centre section :D
