I have an 02 Fiat Stilo 1.9 jtd Dynamic. I've had it a while and not really any problems so far....until now. I have a whine when I accelarate in 4th and 5th gear and get past 40mph. The performance doesn't seem to be affected but it makes a loud whine. I think its the turbo but just don't know. I'm scared its going to blow up. Its been rainig heavily lately and I'm not sure if its to do with that.

Leave the wife/GF at home.
Any smoke? (car not wife/GF)

Can you replicate the whine in any other gear? (Whilst on boost up a long hill in 2nd or 3rd for example)

If its turbo related you *should* be able replicate it in most gears.

Also could be worth checking g/box oil level

Too much play and the fins catch the housing causing the siren or howl noise.
If not you need to try different gears , clutch in/out, in neutral, speeds , loads(throttle off/on)
To find when noise is there and not to help diagnose engine or gearbox or other drivetrain parts.
