Fiat Stilo 1.9 JTD Starting Issue
My car will only start if pushed off, If i try and jump start it, It turns over fairly fast and will eventually start. it does however struggle to fire.
Once the car is running it goes as normal, Plenty of power.

Just like mine... CKP new, MAP new, ECT new, starter new, battery new, fuel filter new, EGR blanked of... and still has that problem. No engine fault reported.... Maybe the fuel pressure...

Ah right, yh I get that as mine will only start eventually wen it's jump started,, fuel rail pressure, k well I haven't took any pressure readings, I did unplug it to see if it would bring up a fault, and it did so I assume it is probably ok, I've got fiat multi ecu scan but I've only really look at the fault codes bit, can I take reading's on that,,

Check the return leakage on the injectors when you get no start you'll usually find one spewing diesel.

K, I take it they r the little pipes coming off each injector,, do I try one at a time, and wat will this tell me?

If one of the return pipes is leaking, it's where you'll be losing your pressure from.

I think replacement pipe is a few quid per mtr or it was on my old Rover diesel when i replaced those.

I have checked the return pipes and all other pipes for leaks and have none,, wat else could b checked before I start chucking money at it, I've looked at all the usual stuff map, maf, egr etc, I've put new glow plug's in n a garage recons it's to do with fuel pressure but don't exactly know what, lol.

yes - MES will read the rail pressures, :)

IF the pump is getting tired, it requires revs to get good pressures.. why tow starting works better..;)

You're not looking for a leak in the return pipes you looking at how much diesel is leaking from each injector into the return. When the injectors are bad or worn they generally spew diesel into the return. Ideally you'd measure the leakoff ... Google leak off test. But I find that when your pressure is so bad you can't start the leakoff will be obvious enough by eyeballing it.

So I've tried the leak back test and all the injectors seem to be returning the same amount of fuel at a slow dripping pace, now wat! Wats the chances of it being the high pressure fuel pump, n is there two pumps one in the tank n the high pressure one on the engine,, wat else could I rule out,,??

??? Come on lads n lasses,, someone must have some clue as wat it could b or a test to rule stuff out,, is it the hp pump or something electrical?? Much appreciate ur help peeps,,,,,,

Its most likely low fuel pressure, lift pump strainer, lift pump, fuel filter, hp pump regulator, hp pump, injectors, rail sensor. Lift pump should make 3+bar.

When was filter changed last?

If you can't test the pressure, don't have diagnostics to monitor pressure, regulator percentage you're stabbing in the dark and can end up making unneccesary costly replacements.

Err, fuel filter was done just over a year ago when the water in fuel filter warning kept popping up, but still pops up now n then! Lift the strainer and pump in the fuel tank! To check for! crap in the strainer,, will I need to empty the tank first,, I do have free version of fes, I took some figures, not started of course, fuel pressure 1.8 bar, fuel pressure signal 0.503v, fuel pressure regulator 1.23%, desired fuel pressure 469.0 bar, baro pressure 1010m bar, baro pressure signal 3.993v,, dunno if this will help as I haven't checked wat the figers are supposed to b yet, lol,

Lol, ok I just thought that was coz the engine wasn't running,, I thought that the hp pump would have to be running to get the desired pressure,, is this not so,,,,,,

I bet it is so, my guess is the 1.8bar reading I took, was the pressure from the fuel tank pump, and to get the desired fuel pressure the hp pump would have to b working, ie engine started, am I wrong!

K, I will if I can get it started, but that ain't happening till Sunday as I'm busy tomo, so if I do and it does have a desirable reading, that would mean the hp pump is good, which will bring me back to, wtf is wrong with the fn thing haha, love the stilo really,,,
