Hey all,

New to the forums, but thought I would ask you guys a question, I took my 2.4 Abarth in today for a new front coil spring, its sitting at 59,000 miles (52 Plate) on its second belt after being changed at 50K. Anyways drove it about 1.5 miles today and the belt snapped, got a loud pop burning smell and some smoke from the front drivers side wheel arch and engine stopped!

The damage hasnt been assessed other than knowing it is the belt that has gone, but I am wondering from my understanding these engines are all "interference" engines, so im guessing that this is most likely not worth repairing assuming I will need 10 inlet vales, 10 exhaust valves a new head gasket set, water pump and a timing belt kit to get it back on the road....

Just from that math, that looks to be around £1000 including labour

Does anybody have anything thoughts or advice?

Thanks

Drastic stuff, more so when you done the right thing and had belt done 9k ago..only thoughts that may shine little light on things for you is to think that as belt only done 9k was it done by garage and if so was it in last 12 months and do they have any guarantee on the work and parts fitted as some parts come with some sort of guarantee if fitted by garage so may be worth a think on

+1

One reason it's tempting to have a FIAT dealer do a job like a cam belt - they give a 2-year warranty on any parts they fit. I had a small camshaft oil leak and they repaired it twice...and fitted a new cam belt (F.O.C.) each time. well impressed...

I have actually been very lucky, after some serious diagnosis time today the following has been discovered at fault after the timing break failure.

Inlet Valves on Cylinder's 2 and 5 are smashed.
Exhaust Valves on Cylinders 1, 3 and 5 are smashed.
No Piston Damage.
Obviously Broken Belt,

So.

4 x Inlet Valves @ £3.35 each
6 x Exhaust Valves @ 5.62 each
New Head Gasket Set @ £80.00
Timing Belt Kit @ £90.00

So £220 and my baby will be back on the road :)

Glad the car is fixable. I can only imagine what a cambelt failure is like.
