In preparation for fitting the 1.4 lump I got recently, I decided to try swapping the 1.2 wiring out in place of the 1.4s to see if it would run with the 1.2 ecu, having the same ecu pin configuration I didn't see the harm in trying it...

My 1.2 had bodged cruise control wiring into the ecu connector, I had to remove this to get the rest of the loom out. However, I have accidentally de-soldered a couple of the other ecu wires! I switched the ignition on to see what would come up and I got no reading on the temp gauge us the red light was constantly on, I have ASR and car security failure :/

But I didn't think much of it, I'm swapping the looms so it'll be back to normal I thought? Well I just finished swapping the 1.4 loom in (straight swap bar swapping in the 1.4 crank and cam sensors so the connected to the loom) but I'm still getting the same messages - ASR and car security fault :(

The car is dead, everything else electrical works apart from the engine starting, not even the throttle body will move if I press the gas pedal. It makes absolutely no attempt to start. The abs pump makes a noise just after the ignition goes on though.

I don't know what to do?? This kind of leaves me stumped as if I can't resolve this then I can't fit my new engine! If the 1.2 ran off the 1.4 then I'd be jammin'! I don't have access to MES, I definitely 100% fitted the 1.4 loom like for like

Thanks for any advice relating to this

Mark

Also, what is this green maxi fuse for? I know that the other green one is for the AC blower fan as that was where this was originally - my AC wasn't blowing then I realised that the green fuse was blown so swapped it with the one that was originally in this spot, now the blow AC fuse is what I'm pointing to but I don't know what it is for, could be related?

tried all your relays?

mine cut out this evening and after a quick search for ASR, Security failure and loose connection errors managed to whittle it down to one of the relays in the top fusebox as you have pictured... i had all electrics and it would turn over but wouldnt fire. a quick tap of the relays and she fired straight up theres a couple in that block, by where you were asking about the maxi fuse, that control ECUs... try swapping them out with the AC relay (iirc AC relay is T07)

I made a bit progress with sorting this problem out this afternoon. I've swapped over the full engine wiring loom off the 1.4 onto my 1.2, it didn't start and was totally dead. Checked all fuses and relays and they were fine. On the 1.4 there was an earth strap on top of the AC pump which I didn't bolt anywhere on my 1.2 when I swapped the looms, following a recommendation I bolted it onto the dipstick mounting bracket. I tightened up all other earth points in particular at the back of the engine round about the block, starter and alternator where it's hard to reach lol

Spare earth strap that would be bolted to the top of the AC pump

Used the dipstick mounting bracket's bolt to fit it against the cylinder heaf

Everything checked over I got my uncle down for a jump start. Lo and behold on the turn of the ignition the ASR and car security lights and warnings were gone, so I rather excitedly went to start it but wouldn't start - battery seemed very low. Another thing I noticed is that the jump leads were smoking a bit when trying to start, and that even after being on the jump leads for 5 minutes as soon as my uncle removed the negative lead off the battery my car went dead immediately?!

I feel I'm very close to solving whatever it is I ruined in the first place lol the ecu seems fine and the throttle valve moves with the pedal now, fuel pump is priming etc maybe a good charge of the battery over night or a new battery??

I've half got my proof that the 1.4 loom runs with the 1.2 ecu and engine so I'm optimistic that I can run the 1.4 engine off the 1.2 ecu and 1.4 loom with a remap, but won't know for certain till I solve this!

You should have tried to swap the battery completely, to see if the car would start on its own.

If it did, taken it for a spin to see how it works, then confirm it's the battery and put this nightmare behind you.

Wish I could do that but I don't have a spare and only one of my friends has a spare which I'm going to get tonight after work hopefully, he also has a battery charger so I'll charge my one through the night :)

Oh mark! What a pickle you have got into! I hope you get this sorted soon?? I've been keen to see this 1.2/1.4 conversion finished and running ;)

You needn't worry no more dude! Got the battery charged today while at work and got home tonight, connected it up and went to start it and, as if nothing had ever happened, it started! It's running sweet, I've had it out a nice drive to get rid of the rust on the brakes and check it over and all is well :D

So now I know that the 1.4 wiring loom is 100% compatible with the 1.2 engine and ecu - with the 1.4 cam and crank sensors fitted to the 1.2 so due to the different connectors to the 1.2's - so I'm feeling very confident indeed about fitting my 1.4 engine now and getting the 1.2 ecu mapped to suit, feeling very happy about this now :D

That's this little episode over with, I'll update my members motors thread when work on fitting the new engine starts :)
