Most likely reason is damage to lambda or its wiring. Grovel underneath and identify where the two lambda sensors are and look for damage to them, or their wiring. If this is the fault, should be an easy fix, although not necessarily cheap.

If catalyst is under car, rather than vertical off manifold, this is susceptible to damage if struck. When you dropped into the pothole, if the cat was struck on the ground, the internal matrix can break, then it won't do its job properly. Signals from lambdas don't match what they should be, so ECU goes into limp home mode. If lambdas and wiriing look ok, tap cat and see if it rattles. It shouldn't!

Failed / broken lambda shouldn't cause the car to enter a limp mode as the ECU has pre determined tolerances to work within should it not get any lambda readings.

Have you tried driving it since you got it home? As said you will need to get the fault code read to determine where to look for the problem. If you can't do that at the moment then you could check all the sensor connections for the engine such as the cam and crank sensors and the connection to the throttle body. Worthwhile perhaps checking the ecu earth strap is secure.

hi thanks for your reply, when i went over the pot hole i never hit anything underneath as it was only a small hole,i have been looking at the car again today and when its stationary and the engine is on tick over the revs seem to be going up to 2000 then drops right down to were it nearly cuts out,i have noticed the eml and the airbag warning light is on now,if you have any idea what this could be i would appreciate it if you could give me some advice
many tthanks

As I said previously Ben ideally you need to get the cars fault codes read as it could be anything.
