hi guys

first post here about a fiat.

we bought my sister an 06 1.8 stilo which we now know is using massive amounts of oil, about 5l per 800 miles! question..... what do we do with it? is it worth fixing the engine? would we find a decent 2nd hand engine? or do i just burn it????? she cant afford to take a loss on the car. help much appreciated.

definately not leaking, a small amount of weeping at rocker cover, nothing major at all, but its getting through around 5l per month! between 800-1000 miles

As I've just written on another thread, try a thinner, fully-synthetic oil such as 5W40. The oil control rings on the pistons might well be sticking or blocked. You might also add some engine flush before you drain what's left.

The FIAT suggestion for dealing with this problem is to use a thicker oil, 10W60, but interestingly, that's fully synthetic as well, and therefore probably has better flow characteristics than the standard 10W40 semi-synth.

That's an astonishing amount of oil to lose in such a short amount of miles!! my stilo also likes its oil - around a mug full every 1000 I'ld say and I found its consumption went up when I change to a thinner oil (0w40). I now use 5w40 and it hardly needs topping up.

Dave I'ld say you deffinatly have some sort of mechanical issue there like a broken oil ring or worn out valve stem seal - does it smoke badly from the exhaust?. Either way it sounds like it needs a rebuild, which could be done for the price of a second hand engine but only if you do it yourself really?

thanks for the replys guys, ill try the 5w40 oil and see if it makes any difference. when she told me the oil was disappearing i found somewhere on the net that fiat say with this engine 1l per 1000 miles is normal usage!!

not capable of doing a rebuild myself, could manage swapping the engine but then ive got no guarantees on the engine id be putting back in!

the wierd thing is that it doesnt smoke, id expect plumes of blue stuff for that amount of oil. but its definately not leaking and its not in the water either!

need to do something about it asap before she ceases the damn thing. shes really not the best at looking after her cars!

alot of the time the cat hides the blue smoke, i remember on the 20v's epecially the coupe 20vt alot of owners would whip the cat off and it would smoke so then they would put it back on and then it didn't.

does your car have the plastic under tray? as this could be hiding some oil drips that may only drip like mad when the pressure is up in the engine?? just an idea

If it comes to it here's a 1.8 for sale on eBay:

Pretty cheap I'd say - it's cheaper than the 1.4 I recently bought (although it has 54k on it). You should cover all bases first before committing to it though.

thanks again guys for the replies,

it doesnt have a plastic tray underneath, i got my sisters fella to park it over cardboard every night for the past 2 weeks and theres 2 drips on it! ive also had it on ramps while its running and still nothing! i didnt know it was possible for an engine to get through that much oil!

the only thing that swings me in any direction is that the oil filler cap smells like burnt oil. oh and the fact that it uses nearly as much oil as it does fuel!!

that engine seems cheap, might be the way forward

hi guys, nothing has changed with the stilo, still using masses of oil even after she started using the oil reccomended in earlier posts. its used 1.7l in 8 days, doing less than 300 miles, its also cutting out a lot and struggles to pull away, ive told her not to drive it but since when do women listen to anything us guys say?? any advice?

on a positive note, i bought a fiat coupe on friday to take to santa pod! just as a lads weekend away bit of fun. it cost me £390 11 months mot n 6 months tax! 2.0l 20v. its amazing, it ran down the strip all weekend even beating my mate in his bmw 528i m sport! he was gutted. it did a 15.9 second run at 91mph. drove it back today to birmingham and it never missed a beat. best £390 ive ever spent!

thanks for the reply, any ideas why it cuts out and struggles to pull away? would that all be related to using oil? i see youre in warwickshire? ive posted about the coupe i bought in that section, could you shed any light on the issues thats got?

Hi. I had a same problem about 2 weeks ago and it can be either of the two options:

1) You "may" have an oil leak where the head gasket seal is, thus the oil getting into the pistons and burning. This was thought to be my initial problem and would of set me back roughly £500 for the new head unit + cam belt & labour.

2) The seals around the spark plugs may be knackered making the spark plugs sit in oil and burn it. After thorough checks, this turned out to be the real cause of my problems and set me back about £80 for the parts and labour.

I've only just recently joined this site, but hopefully this knowledge helps!

thank you for the reply, its going in the garage on tuesday, im sick of trying to sort it for her, ill update tues and let you know what the verdict is.

so then guys, stilo went in garage, im told theres not much they can do about the oil usage except a rebuild or transplant. mot was up next week so put it in for one, failed on the following...
headlamp (both) not working on dipped beam
indicator switch faulty
nearside stop lamp not working
cracked windscreen
front drop links (both) anti roll bar linkage has excessive play
front (both) coil springs broken
front(both) lower suspesion arms
front (both) tires

the front wheels didnt feel connected to the car!! shes only had it a few months! ive given it back to her and washed my hands of it! thanks for all the advice. time to concentrate on the coupe!
