1st fault-Looking for any help please. I have recently purchased 1.4 2004 3 door stilo. but has slight bumpy vibration through the seats and floor - steering wheel and drive is absolutely perfect does anyone have any thoughts tips on what it is or how to check / eliminate this; its not serious but more annoying.

2nd fault (I think) the steering is perfect in operation but when stationary with wheels straight if I shake steering wheel left to right sharply there is a knocking noise from under the front of the car again any ideas /tips will be most appreciated (don't know if this is normal never had a car with electric steering before).

I don't think 1st and 2nd are related but open to your help guys.

Thanks
Alan

Are the brake disks OK ? Do you also feel the vibration in the brake pedal ?

best to jack front of car up and check wheels for any play..steering track rod ends ,wishbones, and drop links basically give them all a good check for any worn movement..if related to steering could well be track rod ends but if you have wheels off the ground just check for worn all parts that could give the issues you have, give drop links a proper tug to check if worn, may as well check driveshafts if tripod joint is worn just need a good grab with hand to check not worn ,,only way to find out is get your hands dirty and wheels off the ground and can be done one wheel at time but easier if you have tools like jack and axle stands to do two at same time that way the steering system will be free to check better

If mh's advice checks out ok I suggest you then look to see if you have any deformed tyre which could cause vibrations, when the car is being driven.
You may need to refer to a dealer/service agent to check the steering column is not loose at the lower joint. This problem has been reported elsewhere on this forum . (you will need to try 'search' to get info)

Thanks for tips I will investigate when it stops raining here in Ireland - let you know
Cheers
Alan

also start thinking about your driveshaft to CV joint, if its not fitted properly or worn you will certainly get vibration. knocking and whirring.

Just a thought, might not be the issue but worth adding to the list of checks while you are under there.(y)

If/when all the mechanical checks have been done and fixed, if vibration persists, this is probably wheel balance - see your tyre dealer. Do the mechanical checks first.

Wheel balance usually shows around 50mph, but can range from 35 - 70.

Rear tyres gone. Out of balance...
You would get vibrations from steering if it would be something in the front.
