Hey everyone,

I was doing some research on the fiat stilo and its gearboxes. I saw on Wikipedia that the 1.6 although rare did have a 6 speed option.

Can anyone confirm this?

Is the gearbox the same as the smaller engined 6 speeds? Just with a different bell housing for the different family of engine?

Thanks for the help!

Matt

I'm sure Davren will correct me, but I don't think the 6-speed was available in the UK with the 1.6 engine. As I recall it was fitted to a smaller engine - the 1.2?

Yes i Believe the 1.2 and 1.4 had 6 speed options.

Well then my next question is, Does the 1.2 or 1.4 6 speed gearbox bolt onto the 1.6 bell housing? and is it compatible with the 1.6 engine?

Thanks in advance :)

researching the internet for info on my gearbox i believe the bell housing isnt the same BUT the gear box is in 3 parts so if you replace the bell housing of that gearbox with the 1.6 and bold it on the gearbox it should fit. i noticed the parts are pretty much identical throughout the rest just different gear ratios. Even the diff is exactly the same supposedly more reinforced if you see the gearbox codes in elearn it just has an additional R for reinforced.

The following gearboxes are available for the Stilo
C514 6 speed for the 1.2 16V version
C514R 5 speed (R stands for 'reinforced') for the 1.6 16V version
C510 5 speed for the 1.8 16V version
C510 5 speed for the 1.9 JTD 80 bhp version
C530 5 speed with selespeed electrohydraulic unit for the 2.4 20V version
Getrag 5 speed for the 1.9 JTD 115 bhp version.
Dave.

My old mans 53 plate 1.6 had a 6 speed box. It was an active aircon iirc.
I'm pretty sure they're unusual, because the one time I had to take him and the car in to the dealers in Newport to get some work done I overheard the parts bloke screeching "Tha' 1.6 don't 'ave a f**king 6 speed! No 1.6es have six f**king speeds!" :D

Yes well i assumed that if the 1.6 5 speed and the smaller engined 6 speed cases are identical, that fiat must have put together at least a few from the factory.

OK so we know these gearboxes fit each other, but has anyone ever actually converted one?

Thanks for the responses so far guys! :)

i had put a 1.6 gearbox from a doblo and had different gear ratios a tad shorter. i did notice though that the gearing cause it was different was causing the car to brake on its on in some gear changes. Even if you did do it i dunno if its worth doing so. unless you find a 1.6 gearbox with 6 gears which have been calibrated correctly to avoid gear change braking.
