hi my 1.9 jtd wont start was fine thurday went out yesterday and wouldnt start only message coming up is preheat fault i have put 3 new glow plugs in but its still coming up could the relay being faulty stop it starting also it seems to have developed a pumping sound from the back of the engine never noticed it before but could it from cranking it over without starting any help would be apprecited as need it working

On a jtd it should still start even without glow plugs operating sounds to me like ya tdc/rpm sensor has failed is the eml light on

check you are getting a fuel supply is the pumping sound similar to slight gurgle sound..
Do you hear the faint sound from under back seat of car from the fuel pump i.e whirring souind for few seconds when turn ignition on..another way to test fuel supply is to remove inlet fuel line to the fuel filter place catching item such as plastic cup under the removed fuel hose from filter ,switch ignition on and you should have some fuel caught in the container each time you turn ignition on ..if no fuel look at fuel pump relay and fuse located in the battery fuse relay area..relay for fuel pump is black one located nearest front of car and number T10 if you have air con swap it with that relay to get by air con relay is black one neaest right wing of car looking from front and fuse for fuel pump i think is F21 in same fuse relay area ..

hi cheers guys the eml light isnt on, only thing on dash is the preheat failure warning. made sure there was fuel in it but dont think fuel is coming through from the tank as when you take the feed from the tank to the filter of and turn it over no fuel pumps through so will check the relays in the morning as the next thing to do.Is the fuel tank sender/pump under the rear seat if so does anyone know how to remove the seat to inspect the tank if its not the relay/fuse cheers again

Lift seat up at back and theres a small plate held by 3/4 screws then the pumps held in by a big collar that unscrews

Before u do that u havent cleaned the car and knocked the fuel pump cut off switch think its either on the passenger or drivers front side kick panel underneath dash little push button push it and then recheck

Stilos have probs with fuse boxes filling up with water aswel if battery cover has been left off for awhile and cause weird faults

Have ya tested all glow plugs correctly as u said u only replaced 3

With a test light to test open circuits or a multimeter to check resistance if them

If ya replaced the glow plugs and light still flashing theres a reset procedure for relay
Turn ignition on till light goes off start car and leave flashing till goes off then turn ignition off leave for a minute an then turn back on till light goes out then start and it should go out
If not the relay has burnt from the faulty glow plugs although wont stop it from starting

cheers for the reply ive checked the fuel cut of and its not that ill check the fuse box but its dro as a bone i think, i could only get 3 new plugs on short notice and the one i left is a right pain to do not that any are easy on this thing but i have been through them with a multimeter and they are all giving the same reading so think its the relay but it seems to activate so ill try the reset procedure and check the fuse/relay under the bonet before i check the tank just glad its not looking like the pump on the engine at the minute thanks for the help ill report back later when ive tried everything also i have a mate with a diag coming to read the faults so hopefully will get an answer today even if it means replacing the tank pump at least ill get an answer

yes you should get some fuel coming from tank fuel pump for few seconds when ignition is switched on...check the relay and fuse first as I had similar issue and although was getting voltage to the tank fuel pump it was not enough to run the tank fuel pump as the the relay in battery fuse box T10 was worn so not getting a good connection..to get by until new relay arrived I swapped the tank fuel pump relay with my air con relay as they are the same , and like yourself at first thought my engine high pressure pump had failed, was big relief when it was just the relay best to check the relay and fuse before moving to tank fuel pump
Remember you will have to switch ignition on and off a few times to prime the fuel back into the fuel lines

ok so switching the relays doesnt do anything no fuel coming from the feed from the tank with either relay so how do the rear seats come out to check the tank pump as the seats are on a slide

was fuse ok also F21
mine is a multiwagon stilo so was just a case of lifting the rear seat base forward part of design to make more load space not sure of the car version, then tank fuel pump was clearly visible and easy to access.tap plastic outter ring off and fuel pump comes out there are locating lugs when re-fitting so it only goes back the right way and a sealing gasket that needs to be seated right just few points to look out for if it comes to removing tank fuel pump which with seat base out of the way you should certainly be able to hear whirring when ignition on when all power is back to normal
When I check my fuel line for fuel it was the centre line pointing forward connected to fuel filter and also when you get to tank fuel pump with switching ignition on you will only be abl;e to read voltage on the thicker tank fuel pump wires for few seconds, as it kills the power if engine not running other thin wires are just the fuel gauge sensor wires
ooh and the tank fuel pump is roughly central position under rear seat, with pre-cut carpet as cover then black plastic cover

ok cheers my rear seats slide and tilt so look a pain to remove but all signs are its that pump as cant see anything else wrong so thats the next step i think

if seat slides and tilts imagine should be easy access to the pump..
before removing pump you could try removing fuel line from pump and place old rag round pump to check for any fuel out put from pump they are marked with arrow which is feed and return line and have the same clip type fuel line just make sure when you put them back on when work all done they are securely clipped back in place as when I got mine sorted the line shot off with the pressure from pump as I had not seated the fuel clip back was in the yard so not big deal..is best to check all wiring to pump first as they are not cheap items if you are looking for new tank pump, I looked into prices and around £200 for new item and £50 seemed to be breakers price.
The tank fuel pump needs a good healthy voltage to operate

the seats tobe bolted down like the front seats are as they slide back and forward and the back rest tilt so cant see how to get to the pump at the moment

Had a quick check and the fuel line feed to the fuel filter in engine bay is on the right side when looking at from front..made error earlier when said was centre line at filter

Have to unbolt the seats as i found out on mine take the long large seat out and pump is under there

If you have airbags in the rear seats, disconnect the battery and wait at least 20 minutes before disconnecting any air bag wiring
