Hi guys!


I got in my car this morning all ready for a nice drive to work, when I get a nice beep from the dash and a message saying the car needs a service.

I have taken a look through the options in regards to oils and filters, but would like to know what you all think.

The car is a 2005 (54) plate Stilo Abarth Manual with 38K on the clock, mainly used for commuting, but would like it to see a track sometime soon.


I have chosen the following items for the service:

all looks perfect to me, i run a 1.6 3 door and all i use are the irridium plugs, fully synthethic oil, and i replaced the standard filter with a aftermarket mushroom filter, but what i think ash is going for over the paper filter is the increased air flow over a standard paper filter but if thats the case i would go for installing a aftermarket mushroom filter or cone filter, better air flow, better mpg when driving like a good person or in my case on the country roads it does sound better and gr8 for over taking! (y)

also when doing the oil change i would remove the old oil (cold) replace it with the same amount of diesel and run the engine till up to temprature, dont drive it just let it idle, drain that properly then add the new oil and oil filter!

this process will decoarbonise and clean the internals of your engine and will keep your oil fresher for longer and its better for ur fule economy (y)


p.s. you missed out the oil filter :) dont forget that!!!

the 2.4 has a weak bottom end as it is i'd hate to think some one is going to kill theirs with wrong spec oil:(

That's why I made the post :) this was the oil recommended by the Opie oils website.
 
Agreed. But the point for the OP is that it is not a replaceable service item like the filters in some petrol cars and all diesels...

In that case, be aware that removing the oil filter on the 2.4 is an absolute PITA.

Don't drain any oil until you have successfully removed the filter. It can only be done from under the car. Removing the lower section of the exhaust heat shield improves access to the filter a little. There aren't many strap wrenches that will work on it, so experiment first to make sure you have one that does!

When you remove the filter you will get oil dripping everywhere (this is normal - prepare for it!) and once you've removed your old filter, inspect it carefully to make sure the rubber sealing ring is still attached to the filter and not the engine.
