Does your 1.6 cut out, come up with asr faults loose connection or a myriad of other faults.
you have done your d4 / fusebox and checked your earths and battery with no improvement?
Your now are suspecting that ecu is the problem, your most likely correct at this stage, you check the prices and nearly fall over with shock.....
DON'T worry its may not be totally shoot.
I had this problem on our mw 1.6. I looked around and was staggered at the prices, i didnt want to get a virginised unit as i could be in the same boat a few months down the line. stuff it nothing to loose!
I removed the ecu and opened it up, the back plate is sealed so you need to break that seal with a sharp edge. then pry it off carefully.
in you look closely you can see some of the pins are not in the correct postion, they should all be level and uniform.
using a fine tipped soldering iron gently heat and push the pins back into thier correct postion using a flat screwdriver.
remove the old solder with a solder sucker or braid and apply new solder.
I suspect that this problem occurs when the ecu is removed during cambelt changes the pins dont line up correctly and get pushed though the pcb.
on our car the problem didnt arise until the weather turned very cold, metal contracts at low temps so that little contraction was breaking small connections that were left causing the car to die.
put the ecu back and run it, if it runs with no errors job done!!!
