Hello

I've had this noise ever since i've had the car, even with a new engine. Basically when lifting off the throttle theres a kind of jangle/metallic noise. It happens when the car is stationery and in motion. It doesn't bother me to much really i just wondered what i could be. The car is a JTD.

Thanks

Phil

Let it develop

It sounds similar to the noise that my faulty clutch pulley made but quieter! I've had a new one fitted and a new alternator belt. Can alternator bearings make such a noise? I don't have tensioners so i reckon its something to do with the alternator or crank pulley. My thinking is purely down to elimination.

Thanks

Anyone? Its only present on startup and probably last for about a minute or less. Its more prominent with heaters and lights on. It doesn't make the noise when in motion. I'm thinking alternator bearings, do you think thats likely? I've had a new battery fitted. Could the faulty battery have worn the bearings or anything else to do with the alternator? I'm just getting fed up with noises from this area. New clutch pulley and 2 belts have been fitted.

Thanks

Phil

Simple things could be exhaust heat shields or maybe a broken catalytic converter, but it could be the DMF. If its not causing any problems then as said let it develop.

I've been down to my local garage and i explained to him what was happening. He sounded sure it was the alternator and thats my thinking too. Its getting more prominent and when i turn on the lights and heaters it definetly gets louder. The thing that puzzles me is that it eventually fades when idle and it doesn't do it when in motion, only a slight jangling noise. I've had this on and off sine october and getting a fed up of it now. So after a 2 new belts and a clutch pulley surely it must be the alternator, possibly bearings?

Right, i've had the alternator tested with that long screwdriver and it sounds fine. The bloke needed to hear the noise to make a more accurate diagnosis but when i got there it had gone, typical! So i'm going back tomorrow. It COULD be the crank pulley but it could be anything :)

Hi. Crank pulley tends to start rattling at about 70-80000 miles and your description sounds very much like it. Mine used to be worse when I put the air con on.

70-80000 miles.....thats interesting because this new engine i had fitted has only covered about 45k miles. I've been reading alot a posts similar to my problem and the DMF and clutch are mentioned. I hope its not that :( This seems like its going to be a difficult problem to solve.

If the rubber in the pulley is worn, you will be able to move the outer metal part.

If you do buy a new pulley, the design of it has been modified. You will also need 4 shorter bolts to fit the new type pulley.
