Probably an air lock. System needs bleeding.

Re: heater not hot again

Your thermaostat is fault if the temp gauge drops at all, but you should still get heat when it's sitting in the middle. I don't think my 1.4 had an upper bleed screw. Possibly a blockage in the system?

Re: heater not hot again

Mine had the same problem, I put a stat in, no difference I cured it by flushing water through heater matrix about 4 times. That sorted it right out.

Re: heater not hot again

Just be careful when flushing matrix with hose as mains pressure is a lot more than found in a car's cooling system.

Not in the UK, we're not lucky enough to have pressure washer hoses off the mains, or I'm not anyways

Re: heater not hot again

Indeed. But in all seriousness I have seen cores wrecked by putting hose on them. Mains is typically 40-60 psi (3-4 bar) but the car's cooling system is 10-15psi (1 bar)

Re: heater not hot again

I know my mains supply isn't 3-4 bar, only about 1-1.5 at best at mine.

Although a quick search reveals its anywhere between that and 3 bar for different parts of the UK.

Re: heater not hot again

Just an update on this! I replace my thermostat today and my temp is bang in the middle again and toasty hot heater again!

My technique for getting rid of air in the system was leave expansion bottle lid off. Start car and let I run and warm up. There was still a airlock somewhere so I squeezed the pipe coming out of the thermostat a couple of times and this pushed coolant into the expansion tank! The airlock soon followed and bubbled up in the expansion tank!

Jobs a good 'un!
