Hi i just brought a 04plate 1.4 stilo 60k on the clock came with a warranty but my engine temp goes to half the drops to quarter its constanty on the move up and down, and the heater in the car dose not get warm , before i take it back i just wanted to know if its a easy fix as the dealer is a fairly long way away , thanks adam

Have you checked the coolant level is ok in expansion tank..you may well have thermostat issue, which would be coverd under your warranty I would of thought,, if it is some distance the dealer may agree for you to have the work done locally and cover the costs
There is a thread further down page with details of a thermostat issue

yes the water level is fine, yeh i was reading through the warranty everything but oil leaks and fair & tear is covered, i'll give them a call tommrow

yes would of thought be coverd under mechanical engine part for warranty
Try and push the idea of getting work done locally and either garage bills them or you pay and they pay you back if you trust dealer to pay you back.. they may offer 75% or some figure of costs which if you think about what it would cost on fuel to get there and back to dealer may work out ok depending how far away they are anyway let you do the sums on that,
Although I do not think they would do it without getting it inspected by some sort of registerd garage first but hey no harm in asking them.
Just had a light turn on in my head and another option is to say you are not happy driving it as it is and they would have to arrange collection of car though then you may have to find you own way to pick car up when fixed and drive back, you may get a curtesy car if is nice garge did they have free coffee on offer there is a good sign they might

i will see what i can do, unfortanatly there was no free coffee :( the warranty is with a seprate company hopefully i'm not going to be sent on a chase between dealer and warranty

You might have a air lock in the water system, if so it may need bleeding!

Ive bleed the system but no signof a air lock :-( , it's booked into a halfords auto center through the insurance - has any body had experience with these

least you tried bleeding the coolant system could of easily been that but life is never that simple is it..well and insurance warranty covering so least you not out of pocket, thermostat can go on any car at some point..and if halfrauds well if it is not done right or any problems just keep at them until it is company like them should do the job right from the start.., hope it gets you back on the road soon and be end of troubles well for some time anyhow plus you got some use out the warranty..

Remember Not to mention a word when you take car in that you tried bleeding the system in case they try and pass the blame back to you for tinkering with it even though you had good idea as them of what you were doing.

Willing to put £50 on it being a thermostat which is stuck open. Same happened on my 1.4, heat would get luke warm but nothing more in the winter. Temp guage everywhere, once thermostat changed though temp gauge would sit in the middle and the temp would get nice and toasty :D

This will be what a jammed open thermostat will be doing, letting a lot more water through when under pressure, and resulting in the engine being over cooled.

i will comment what it is soon as i get a day off work to take it in, so glad the warranty havent told me to take it back to the garage and garage blame the warranty kind of thing as there separate company's, what kind of mpg should i be getting it was averaging 35 driving rather carefully

Nope, heavy car with a smallish engine. Any stop starting is going to cripple the MPG. Never got anywhere near 42 in mine. We only average that in our 1.2 Panda which is 1/3 lighter ;)

In that case I'd rather have my Abarth :)
I made this trip home on Friday and... ah, it deserves its own thread

I get mid 30's in short trips (currently about 6 miles to work).

Long trips your get low 40's, really long gentle trips you'll get mid-high 40's depending on tyres / weather / and careful driving.

That said a gammy thermostat will mean the car isn't getting up to optimal operating temp so won't give the chance of best fuel economy.

I'm just about to do the 'stat on my 1.2 Stilo, I'll feedback with economy improvements once I've done the job. Will be the weekend most likely.

Coolant sensor changed and economy now 44.8! Put it down to a long run, but the car does seem smoother now, maybe coolant sensor is used by ecu for fueling somehow? ImageUploadedByFIAT Forum1374946945.718883.jpg
