Dear Friends!

Have the following problem (see the picture attached):
Rear wiper got broken at the point where it is attached to the rotating axis.
I tried to unscrew the screw nut but without success --- did not want to put much force on it since the whole construction looks weak (glass window + unknown motor mechanism sitting inside).

My question is - should i still force it and try to unscrew it or I better apply some liquid to remove the rust which can make it easier to unscrew this nut?

Ps: What is this white substance on the picture? Is it a glue? Whole thing was functioning on the glue connection originally???
Car=Fiat Stilo Multijet Wagon

Thank you for your help!

Hi, Welcome to the FF.

The white substance is corrosion where the aluminiun alloy of the wiper arm has chemically reacted with the steel of the spindle.

Try using some penetrating oil (WD40) on the nut and spindle, then turn the nut back onto the spindle half a turn before taking it off.

Hello!

Thanks for a quick reply! i will try to do that :)
Local repair shop asked me 40 Euro for the work.

Nut should undo easily with a 10mm ring spanner. If it's tight just give the spanner a sharp tap with a hammer at its far end (after soaking the nut in WD40 or equivalent). You then have to pull the arm off its splines and this can be a bit tricky. A small puller device is useful if you can get one that fits. The spindle to the motor passes through a big rubber grommet in the rear window and it is unlikely you will damage the glass when undoing the nut.

Since the arm is cracked, it will probably just fall off when the nut is removed. That's probably why it needs to be replaced - because the shaft is spinning inside the arm :)

I had this problem as well when trying to remove the wiper. Mine wasn't cracked though.

WD40 and a big pull on the ring spanner did the job for me. I wanted to change the blade, but since I couldn't find one that resembles it at a cheap enough price, I just took a regular Valeo premium blade for the front wipers and changed the rubber with the old one. It's working excellent now.

You will, however, have to change the whole wiper as it's cracked and pretty much nothing can glue it back.

A solution, if you have the right tools, would be to drill a thin hole into the sides and put a small screw there. Nobody will know that was repaired, as it it covered by the plastic cover thingie anyway.

I agree the construction is delicate, as you push directly into the rotor of the engine and everything is glass next to it. :)

I hope you get it fixed.

Vlad.

be careful, in the case of a couple of weeks both our mw had the rear wipers vandalised.
our bolts were seized as well, but the arm goes though glass so you really dont want to be hitting it with hammers.
what i done was cut the bolt off, cut the bolt NOT the metal arm.
once your have removed enough of the bolt then you will find it comes of easily.
put some copper slip on the thread before putting the new bolt on.

Dear All,

Thanks for the valuable help!

After one week of consecutive tries and applying WD-40 oil i could finally unscrew the nut. I had to remove the wiper by breaking it at the spindle. Then holding the spindle with pliers i could unscrew the nut with spanner.

Success happened after i found out that mechanic will remove this nut for 10 Euro :D

Overall i tried pliers and spanner about 6 times.

Does anybody know where i can buy a complete new back wiper?
Maybe wipers from other models fit on Stilo MW too???
Swiss FIAT center asked me about 45 Euro for it.

Best wishes, Aruro

Thanks for the info! Yes i looked there, just thought maybe the gurus know some specific stores to buy their parts. :)

I was in the FIAT center today and noticed that STILO rear wiper looks exactly the same as Alfa Romeo Giulietta's :) If the radius of the spindle is the same then they are identical.
