General Turbo blown on me

General Turbo blown on me

Do all the jtd not have an antishudder flap in the inlet manifold by egr?mine does and where some have removed it looking for extra airflow im leavin mine in for some insurance against this, with ign off flap will shut and do a fair job of starving engine of air and its oil hopefully.
Mine certainly does (y)

Seems strange it didn't function with a JTD sporting :chin:

All JTDs have the vacuum operated anti shudder butterfly, however it's only ever closed for a few seconds after the engine has been switched off.

Under normal circumstances, as the engine is being switched off, an engine mangement ECU timer keeps the vacuum solenoid open, which in turn closes the vacuum operated butterfly for just a few seconds. At the point of engine switch off, the injectors would also be switched off so no more diesel could enter the engine. A few seconds after switch off, the butterfly should open again and remain open.

If the engine was still getting fuel from another source (e.g. engine oil via a worn turbo bearing), the butterfly would still remain open, because with the ignition off, there would be no electrical power to the vacuum solenoid that allows vacuum to close the butterfly.

Hi all, I had a similar issue late last year. My car was smoking heavily when I could hear the turbo working hard on my commute home.

I got a power loss about 100 metres away from my home. The turbo gave up at this point. I called the AA, the chap checked the turbo & saw the impeller was stuck. Luckily the engine had not ran for very long, so the engine was ok. (The AA chap said if I continued to run the car with the turbo dead would kill the engine)

I had AA parts cover insurance, however the AA decided not to cover the work as their conclusion was a foreign body had entered the intake & damaged the impeller, even though, no leak was found. I`m pursuing it with the ombudsman..any way thats another story.

Because the AA would not cover the work, I decided on a turbo from a breakers yard, taken off a Marea JTD. Its been in the car about 3 months now & is working ok, however, the car smokes a lot when the turbo is working hard. I am thinking of taking it to the garage to check out as I am worried the same issue may occur again. Has anybody got a few suggestions what to look out for or what the issue may be?

You do know the jtd is a CHRA for the turbo, a replacement cartridge. I replaced one on my dads jtd. I got it from eBay. A guy from Latvia , the company called Nerings. It cost around £200 for a new one and is easy to change. The worst part is re setting the actuator to make the boost come in at the correct time. Anyway the unit I got was perfect, comes balanced and tested and I had it swapped in a day.

Not I understand that almci, I was just wondering if I could do a few simple checks for symptons related to black smoke when I put my foot down?

I read somewhere about checking the hose off the intercooler, but since I dont hear any change in noise when the turbo comes on, it may be ok. Other then that, I was thinking about checking my EGR valve which I assume is not turbo related but may be why the car is smoking under load?

Black smoke, possible boost leak split hose or gummed up egr valve could also be a source of boost leak even intercooler itself cracked or holed.
Blocked air filter also maybe, not enough air for given fuel.
A boost leak bad enough for long enough could definately overwork a turbo to try to make boost, but if too bad it should throw up a code as parameters wander too far from expected(the vnt% would be much higher than normal to make same boost)
edit
an egr blanking plate can be had for a couple of quid or made easy enough to test if its the egr valve at fault, sometimes even if squeeky clean the solenoid half can stick partially shut and cause issues.
i think all jtd owners could probably do with a blank to be kept just incase.

You should be taking the intercooler and intercooler pipe off and cleaning them as there is a good chance oil is sitting in there with any turbo damage these things should be cleaned as well as any turbo piping there could also be little bits of metal in there from the blow up,if not removed they will knacker your replacement turbo and any oil in there will cause smoking. dont rely on the garage to have done a decent job of cleaning up. good luck

these guys hit the nail on the head, oil leak in turbo = bye bye, unless you stall instantly. i wouldnt say it needs a full engine though depends what damage has been done. id say turbo, intercooler, oil feed pipe (a must) and any gaskets. do you have oil over the rear end. ive seen the exact same done to a seat and it only needed the turbo and few other bits. when that happens the engine can actually go backwards on itself its rare but not unheard of, that does mean new engine as timing and everything is buggerd as the saying goes
