Hi all! I'm a bit new to this so here goes!
Basically my water pump failed on the motorway and lack of coolant caused my head gasket to blow! So after I had it towed home, I set about striping the engine for a huge rebuild!... Head skimmed, new head gasket, new water pump, new thermostat, new timing belt and all new filters etc...
...Now with all the parts all cleaned and carefully rebuilt, I set about the final task of setting the timing for the new timing belt! (original position accidentally lost during rebuild!) any how I have an elearn disc for the stilo and after finding and printing out the step by step instructions for setting the timing, I followed them to the letter! aligning the driver cog with the rpm sensor, locking the cams in position with an "appropriate" tool replacement and checking that both numbers 1 and 2 pistons are aligned mid point with 1 on the down stroke! All was going like clockwork! belt on as described (anti clockwise from bottom etc) The whole process was done to the letter and was as such easy to do!..... until I tried to start the engine!! ..... NOTHING! not even firing! so I tried moving driver cog 360 degrees (as another thread on here states that the driver turns twice for every one of the driven) STILL NOTHING!!! I have checked sparks on the plugs and all good! I also checked that there was fuel in the injection system! I have checked the fuel cut off switch and I have a half tank of fuel and all electrical connections seem fine!

So Please can someone help!!!! what have I missed???:bang:

Sorry, yes, the engine turns as normall and battery disconnected etc! Darn thing just won't start!

I mean have you re-connected the battery? :)

Also is there any starter motor action? If it's cranking but not firing and the the sparks are fine then check for loose wiring plugs around the throttle body area. Did you unplug any to remove the cylinder head? If so it's possible you forgot to plug in the connector for the injector circuit? There may be fuel in the system but the injectors won't work with the connector unplugged. I made this mistake recently lol

As I said at the original post, as far as I'm concerned all is well with everything else it's just won't start ! All connections are connected etc!

My car is set to fiat's own recomended timing position but still won't start even though it is tuning over nicely ! I stilll need helpful help! Even my local fiat mechanic says it should be working! But the he wants the work! Some one must know!

None! It was an informal chat to pick his brains! I do have a mate coming round hopefuly soon with his diagnostic computer to ether remap the computer or atleast cancel any error codes! Hope this will work as I am so lost as to what to try next!

BINGO!! I've just had a chat with an old mechanic friend of mine and when I told him my story he laughed as though I had reminded him of a fond memory! "have you got hydrolic tappets?" he asked! "yes why" I said! " I've had this before! "I bet they are gummed up with old oil causing low compression! Free them up and then the car will start!" "easy cheat is to put 2-3 drips of oil down each plug hole and then bump start the car at around 30 mph! This is what we did before and it worked!".... I told him that if that works there will be a pint waiting for him in the pub when he finishes for the day! Can't wait to buy him his pint! I will let you all know if he gets his pint! :)

Obvious question, but I take it you turned the engine over by hand carefully after replacing the belt to make sure nothing was misaligned?

Do you have decent compression on all 4 cylinders?

If all of the hydraulic tappets don't work (very unlikely but you never know) then the valves will not open fully. If they have all stuck solid (never seen that happen either) then you will have open valves which may be in danger of hitting pistons when the engine turns.

Hi folks! Just an update, everything I had done was right and car would have started, "IF" I had only checked my piston rings first! (I had no compression) ve since replaced the rings and now my car starts and drives. :) all I have to do now is fit a new oil presure sender and reset the computer. Oh and run it in lol! :) thank you everyone who helped ! :-D
