:confused:Has anyone any ideas on this. For no reason my ABS has started coming up failure on the dasshboard followed by by esr and asr failure. If I turn the car off then on again it clears but starts again 5 mins later! I haqve been on holiday and the car seems sluggish to start TBH. Is it likely to be the battery???

Hmmm. may stick it on charge over the weekend then to see if it cures it. Strange though cos my car doesnt usually suffer from daft messages. Just bought a diagnostic cable and adapters to use with fiat ecu scan. Is it easy to use and will it tell me where the problem maybe???

Hi mate,
All of a sudden the ABS, ESR and ASR failure trio coming up just after or during start can be indications of a battery running low on capacity. It does not mean it's surely that, but for example our Stilo 1.6 Petrol had a 3 year old battery and just recently as the weather started coming down with the cold ;) in the mornings around -0C or even under, I noticed that the car turned very sluggishly, while in warm weather +10C and above it fired on the turn of the key...
Took out the battery, tested it under load which is important and it says that it had around 70% capacity which meant that when the weather is colder and the engine is cold during startup on a battery that is dying the voltage drops enough to cause these "fake" errors exactly in the safety critical systems like the ABS, ESR and ASR.
Changed the battery to a new one, puff, problem gone. Car starts up without any errors in cold mornings now.
Best to just have a quick measurement on the battery.
And if getting a new one, try to find one, well one that suits your pocket for starters, but besides that a battery that has a high cold startup amperage.
There are usually 3 numbers on car batteries.
1. Voltage, it should be 12V
2. Amperage anywhere from 45Ah to 72Ah and
3. Cold start amperage or startup power, a number somewhere in the range of 420A to 720A
Try to find a decent battery with a relatively high cold startup amperage, mine is 620A now and it does it's job.
I have Exide Excell 12V 64Ah 620A by the way.
Cheers.

Thanks for advice. not sure though cod battery is only a couple of years old and is a top of the range halfords one. May take it down there for testing as should be still inder warranty Think it was a 5 year one. It does it once driving though which is the bit i find strange as the battery shoulf be charging by then.

So got my diagnostic kkl cable with Green plug to diagnose abs. Comes up with a fault on right rear wheel sensor!!! I have cleared the fault code.
However, overnight I put the car on charge. I have been out in it and not a thing:confused:.
So it could be battery or it could be sensor. Should I clean the sensor if so does anyone know where it is??
Any help appreciated.

Right rear ABS sensor HELP Please!!!!

PLugged my car in to FES and it came up with right rear ABS sensor! Can anyone tell me where this is located so I can give it a clean???

Re: Right rear ABS sensor HELP Please!!!!

The sensor fits into the back of the hub carrier bracket with one Allen screw. The sensor can be difficult to remove, so if you only want to clean it, it may be easier to remove the caliper and disc and clean it, and the brown plastic covered magnetic ring from the outside.

Depending on what fault code and description you got, it may be a problem with the wiring connector. Follow the wire from the sensor to locate the connector.

Pictures below are from my MW. The shock absorber position is different for the saloons.

(y)Thanks for that(y)
Been out in it again and no beeps so hoping the reset has cleared it along with the battery charge. It is getting due a new set of rear disc and pads though so I will investigate then and clean things up if it persists but it does seem suspicious to me that it stopped since charging the battery up. Anyway, its right for now.;)

So had the rear brakes changed and had the ring for the sesor and the sensor cleaned up. Guess what. Beep Beep Beep. ABS failure! Anyone got any ideas where I should start looking???

Ok so the code its reading is C1211 Rear right wheell speed sensor!. I am wonderig if the caliper needs changing because the garage said the caliper was sticking but thy had freed it off! If there is a slight difference in wheel speed would this show as a fault if you see what I mean???

Also just been out in the car and the red brake warning light keeps flashing on(y)!!! Quickly followed by ebd failure on the dashboard then clears itself as quick as its come on. Noticed the abs failure comes on once the brakes have been released!! Anyone any idea's???? Hhhheeeellllppp!!!

C1211 is a plausibility error, which would suggest one wheel is turning faster than the other. However if it was caused by a seized caliper, the tyre would be skidding along the road.

Try adjusting the brake pedal switch.

Hold the pedal to the floor and pull the centre plunger of the switch out as far as it will go, (you may need long nose pliers to grip it with) then let the pedal up slowly. You should hear the ratchet in the switch.

The switch can go out of adjustment if you lift the pedal with your foot.

Help!!!! ASR EBD ABS Failure! HELP!

Ok so I have got the dreaded ASR EBD ABS failure problem. I have plugged in FES and it comes up with this code 1211. Right rear wheel speed sensor.
With a diagnostic fix discription of the following:-

The speed signal of the indicated wheel is missing or wrong.
Check the following:
1) the wheel sensor and the associated wiring to the ABS ECU for opens, shorts and weak connections, and the ECU for proper ground.
2) the sensor continuity and resistance
3) the ECU ground connection
4) the air gap between sensor and impulse ring
5) the impulse ring and sensor to have no signs of damage or deformation, and to be free of magnetic dust
6) the wheel bearing for excessive play
NOTE:
1) It is ESSENTIAL that all the rims and tires are of the same size, as specified by the manufacturer, and that the tires have correct pressure and show uniform wear
2) using an Oscilloscope to check the signal gives an excellent visual reference of the signal integrity and enables easy comparison between the wheel sensors.
3) this code may be set if a wheel is rotated independently when the car is lifted up and the Key is ON
The reason for this fault is that ECU has received invalid signal from the sensor. The fault is present now. Take appropriate action to fix this sensor fault. Dashboard warning light was activated for this fault.

So far I have changed (as was faulty when inspected. Both rear disc and pads. The right brake caliper as was sticking. The right handbrake cable as was broken and not releasing properly.

I have ajusted the brake light switch as previously advised.
The ABS ring has been cleaned!
Anyone else got any ideas what it may be?:confused::confused:
Its doing my head in.

Re: Help!!!! ASR EBD ABS Failure! HELP!

Forgot to say as well as both abs and asr failure lights on the dash everynow and again the handbrake light gives a quick flash on and off? Just want a deffinate answer as to what it is as its getting expensive just chucking parts at it.
