Okay so last Saturday I bought a 04 1.6 Stilo and was over the moon with it it's got full service history great condition and i've always been a fan of Fiats after my first wee punto but today on the way from work yesterday, after only doing 40 miles in it since I bought it I was going around a roundabout and I got "low oil pressure" message, stopped checked the oil and was plenty in it and this only seems to happen when going around really small roundabouts.

Well, today I got a "Engine Fault" message. I've did alot of reading and it seems that ignition coils cause alot of these problems so I checked them, all fine. There has also been no loss in power or more fuel consumption (pretty happy with the 42mpg i got today) and everything seems as normal till i went back out an hour ago and i got a message saying that my rear fog light was out, I checked and it wasn't. Bad battery maybe?

I have the choice to take it back before next Saturday and working very long hours this week so I wont have time to take it to a garage till Saturday which is a bit of a dilemma as they could turn around and say its Donald ducked and i wont have time to take it back to the place I bought it.

a code reader would be perfect at the moment but again I really don't have the time to get one before Saturday

Anyone got any suggestions that I could possibly do before Saturday as i really like this car and don't want what could be a phantom light make me give it back?

check the battery now. Open the cover and look at it, does it look old? do the connections look dirty? clean them, but if the battery looks old, then change it, but change it for a decent one (budget about £80).

does sound like a load of phantom errors, possibly cured by the installation of a new battery, and clean up of all connections on and around the battery. I found a great test with mine, was to simply operate a load of electrics without running the engine. If the battery goes flat, voila, but i have the luxury of a second car to use to go buy the new battery!

Cheers Clivvey, Had a look at the battery, it looks clean enough and connections seem good but ill give that test a go. I was thinking of resetting the EUC. Does just disconnecting the negative on the battery for a little while do this on Stilos?

Or even better is there a way to do it without dong anything to the battery?

i thought it was half hour to do a ecu reset, but i would remove both terminals, to be fair even if teh battery is new it could be a dudd, i have bought new batteries before and they have gone within a few weeks, even halford said some on theer shelfs are dead before they fit them, personally i would buy a really good battery and pop that on, its probably that that is causing most of of your issues, 3 clean starts will remove the engine management light if there is no fault

Okay, so managed to get the car to the dealer who has booked it in to a garage, don't trust the garage though to be honest. The car is still running great with no obvious problems but the light is still on.

this might be a long shot.... but is there anyone is the Ayrshire area with a code reader that would be able to do it after 6pm today or tomorrow, paid of course

Cheers for the suggestions lads, going to leave the ECU for now.

Okay... so mark read the codes today for me (really good guy) and i ended up with a pretty big list lol :

p0638
p0460
p0606
60105
u1600
p0420
p1687

seems alot of codes but the car runs fine, anyone got any insight to these codes?

None at all :) and it was a good 35 miles, i also noticed there is a crack on the battery cover where water might have got in. might get a new one, anyone know where to get it cheap?

That's a positive!

New battery covers are £110 from the dealers so avoid them just go to a scrappy but sometimes they come up on eBay.

P0368: throttle actuator fault.
P0460: fuel level sensor fault.
P0606: faulty ecu
P0105: MAP sensor
U1600: Immobilizer fault - key not recognised
P0420: catylist low efficiency?
P1687: can't find any info

Should have noted down the info relating to each fault code

But I have a feeling these may be faults that were previously present on the car but were not cleared. First of all you had a fuel level sensor fault - was your fuel level reading correctly after fill ups? You also have an immobilizer fault where it states the key is not recognised, yet you are able to start the car and the fact the car security light was not on. The throttle actuator I believe works the throttle butterfly so if you had a fault with that then you'd have issues with it working correctly making it feel under powered and/ or jumpy? But as you say it drives fine

It may be worth to look into the P0420 fault relating to the catylist, perhaps an emissions test or testing the lambda sensors would cover that? Also as I said earlier, have a check over of the earthing points on the car - ecu, gearbox and chassis - all located in the engine bay.

Wait and see what happens after the car's been checked by the garage tomorrow, maybe the faults will appear again when driving over but let's just wait and see what happens after tomorrow :) Hopefully all is well with your Stilo, it was a very nice example indeed :slayer:

Cheers mark,

Yeah i think the codes have been stored over the years too, as for the fuel level , when i bought the car it was pretty much empty and took a couple of fill ups before it even register so that's what that will be about i think. I'll give them these codes tomorrow and see what they think but i think there isnt much wrong at all. It was just a bit worrying buying a new car and the dash board flashing constantly with problems.

also :

P1687 Metering Oil Pump Stepping Motor Circuit Malfunction

think thats the low oil pressure message i was getting?

Anyway thanks again :)and nice gold top btw, my old man had a 57 gt but i was never allowed to even touch it :(

That more than likely to be the cause of it, but I for one have no idea how to do about checking that :s for the mean time just make sure you've not got any oil leaks and keep an eye on the oil level for good measure.

Gutted man :( though if I had a 57 no one would ever be aloud to touch it :p Mines an 06 LP standard, I fitted seymour duncan pearly gates neck and custom custom bridge pickups to it - sounds incredible to say the least :slayer:
