I have read through some of the posts on here regards the sump plug with no joy.

I have an 05 plate 1.9JTD 115Bhp, Thought I'd change the oil, but no Fiat have me stumped. The sump plug looks to be fitted with a Polydrive 8mm socket, Has anyone else had this on there car? I have a T51 (8mm) HEX bit but this appears to be loose. I dont want to round the sump plug off, But I will replace with a new one. The sump plug is done up very tight. I have a breaker bar and also a 12v Impact wrench, but want to make sure I get the right bit, Does a polydrive sound correct?

Thanks

Sump plug on my 115 JTD is a normal 17mm spanner size bolt head.

No idea what a polydrive is, but most Fiat engine bolts use a RIBE bit, which is a special square section spline. Never seen a sump plug using one of those though.

Hi Darren,

RIBE is the same as a polydrive, there used for stuff that needs to go really tight, no idea why its on a sump plug!

What year is your car?

Mine is a 2003 JTD MW 115bhp.

Just found an image of the Polydrive profile. I think the RIBE profile looks squarer, and the peaks and troughs are more equally spaced.

I think the RIBE profile is only used by Fiat group and some aircraft engine manufacturers for engine components.

I had a similar problem with mine ...

Solved it by using a large hex Alan-key

Some decent socket sets have alan key hex drives.

If not, find the right size of Alan-key - and then purchase the appropriate socket from Halfords.

Edit - mine is an 03 plate, so the plug might have changed.

Yep that's the bugger!

I havea n 8mm Allen key drive but its to big, I also have an 8mm Hex drive which does fit sort of, i'll get a new drive bit and a replacement plug as I reackon it will round off. Stupid fitment for a sump plug, they used to just be a nice big bolt.

Thanks

I have eventually changed the oil and filter. I have replaced the sump plug as the previous mechanic had chewed it up, the new one has an 8mm Allen key socket, also the oil filter was so tight I broke a 1/2" drive on it, some Mechanics are total chimps. At least I know next time it will be easy
