Hi there, my son has a Stilo Abarth which has an ocassional intermittent fault. Sometimes when hot the starter motor does not work, no solenoid click nothing. Walk away from the car for half an hour and it is fine. The starter motor has been changed and today a garage checked out the earthing point and condition of the cables etc. and could find nothing wrong. Needless to say it started every time for them!

If the garage have changed the starter motor, and checked all cables, then I would suspect a faulty ignition switch. Get yourself a length of wire and next time it fails to start, try linking the control terminal on the solenoid direct to the battery. If it now turns over then the ignition switch is faulty.

I'm not convinced though that all connections have been checked as that is a classic cause of this kind of failure.

It could be a faulty main earth connection between the engine block and the battery. Try putting a jump lead from the battery negative post to somewhere on the engine block. If it now turns over then you need to trace and clean & tighten all main earth cables.

A similar problem, but in your case I suspect a loose or bad connection rather than a broken cable - https://www.fiatforum.com/stilo/308946-broken-battery-earth-wire.html
